Flowers and Photography - When Art Imitates Art
By gregoryjohnson
I just posted a slew of flower photos here on Curbly that I took today.
They are also available on my Apple MobileMe Website, Apple MobileMe Photo Gallery, Facebook, Flickr, and Google Picasaweb (in case you have a preferred method of viewing them).
In this series of photos, for several of the pictures, the photograph was taken with two exposures: normal, and then darker.
The darker underexposed photos often have a more dramatic appearance. » READ MORE
Brussels' Carpet of Flowers
By DIY Maven
This 300 square meter carpet is made almost entirely of flowers. Assembled in the Grand-Place, Brussels, the practice of creating such works of art began back in 1971 as a means to promote begonias, the rugs' primary medium. The pattern of last year's installment was based on a medieval carpet design.

Make a Spring Button Bouquet
By DIY Maven
This sweet button bouquet tutorial comes just in time for Mother's Day. The original maker used die-cut felt flowers, but, as DSC says, you could easily cut your own to save on cost. Stuff you'll need to make a bunch include:
- felt, about 25 cents per sheet at your local craft store
- buttons, which you probably have in your button stash
- bamboo skewers, about a buck at the dollar store
- ribbon, which you might have on hand, but there's plenty at t » READ MORE
☼ Grow A Gnome Home
By DestinybyDefinition
I wanted to share my gnome home since it's spring and if you're anything like me, you love unique ideas for potting and planting. I love miniatures so this came as a super~exciting idea to me. I had these cute little gnome dudes in my flower pots inside the house.
My husband recently got into woodwork, and I had him build me the flower box and the little 'house' (a bird house would likely work just as well). I gorilla-glued the rocks and got t » READ MORE

It’s cherry blossom time in D.C., but for those of us who don’t live there, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the flowery fecundity. To do that, we just have to get a little crafty and make our own blossoms.

How to Speak the Language of Flowers
By DIY Maven
We all know roses have their own language. Red means love; pink means admiration. But what if you want to get a bit more poetic about your flower selection? For example, what if you want to convey devotion to your best friend...then what kind of flowers would you give? Honeysuckle and heliotrope that's what. To help you speak the language of flowers, visit this page at Santa Cruz Public Libraries for an alphabetized list of flowers-to-emotions » READ MORE
freecycle flower cuttings replanted
By urbanmomSince buying my house, i've dreamed of the landscaping that I want. I can't hire a landscaper, and have no real experience with planting and growing. I got lucky when I got the clippings of mexican petunias, and poor mans orchid from free cycle. I put the petunias around a tree in my front yard with a flower bed around it. I placed the orchid in a front flower bed that will soon also have roses.
The photos were taken with my ipho » READ MORE
Make Cut Flowers Last Longer
By lilybeeFresh flowers in the middle of winter are an undeniable luxury. In these tough economic times if you're springing for the luxuries, you want them to last. And hey, isn't there a big, pink, flower-giving holiday coming up? (I'm looking at you sweetie.)
Here are a few tips to keep the pretties pretty for longer:

Cheap Flowers, Huge Impact
By lilybeeFirst I should say that I know that flowers aren't really a Curbly thing, but I saw these and was blown away by what a simple clever idea it was. So I figured I'd share.
It's about $5's worth of carnations and some foliage, poked into a potted evergreen.
Simple as that, these were taken about 4 days after I first saw them
there, and not being in water didn't appear to be doing the carnations
any harm.

How to Extend the Life of Fresh Cut Flowers.
By Chrisjob
Know that little packet of additives that come with arranged flower bouquets? Apparently, it's just a little sugar,
chlorine, and some citric acid. So, create your own DIY solution that you can continue to use throughout multiple water changes. "Mix 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon bleach, and 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice in a quart of warm water."
That's it. The bleach sounds scary to me too, but I'm imagining the chlorine keeps out the gunk » READ MORE

BHG has this really simple but very effective flower arrangement idea. All you need is a clear glass pitcher, a tall glass, some lemon slices and flowers.
First, slip the glass inside the pitcher.
Then slice lemons into 1/4" slices and arrange them between the glass and the pitcher. Of course, you'll start at the bottom and then overlap the slices a bit as you go.

Finally, gently pour water over the lemon slices and into the glass and add » READ MORE
