How To: Tile Over a Brick Fireplace

By ModHomeEcTeacher

A designer friend once told me that our brick fireplace with its' expansive raised hearth and built in bookshelves was "just too much for the room."  I decided I liked it and bid her adieu.  However, after I got a load of these artsy new tiles, I may have to rethink this.  It is getting chilly and that fireplace will soon be blazing for long cozy nights of t.v., entertaining, snuggling and reading.  Hmmmm.. » READ MORE

Tiki Fireplace Anyone?

By DIY Maven

front view of rough

A chunk of foam, chicken wire, cement, paint, fire ring, smoke machine and red, glowing eyes and you've got yourself a tiki fireplace. Most likely the actual fireplace was an existing one. Its wall looks as if it has been refinished/skim-coated/veneered to give it a Polynesian look. » READ MORE

Virtual Fireplace, in Blu-ray

By DIY Maven

Several years ago, a local television station started airing the ‘Yule Log.’ Basically, it’s a loop of burning logs in a fire accompanied with Christmas tunes. It has become a tradition in many households, even ones with fireplaces like mine, to tune into 'the log’. As a matter of fact, it’s ratings often top the charts. If you don’t have a ‘Yule Log’ station, here’s the perfect answer: HDScape’s Fireplace, which is a crackl » READ MORE

Fireplace Help

By 374 lbs

I have a fireplace in my apartment that, until recently, had a brass insert with glass doors. It looked similar to the photo below. I removed it because brass just isn't my style but I need to put something else in its place.

created on: 12/02/08

I would like to make something myself and I would like for it to look modern and simplistic. I don't use my fireplace so it doesn't have to be fireproof... I just want to keep the soot in and my cats out while maintaining » READ MORE

Faux Fire

By lilybee

When the weather turns rubbish nothing beats snuggling up in front of a fire, possibly with trashy fiction and preferably with some kind of chocolaty beverage. It's just what winter should be all about. Unfortunately our apartment doesn't have a fireplace so I was forced to improvise...

While technically it wont keep me warm, (except in a cockles-of-my-heart way) it was super easy to make and it makes me smile, and my baby scream with b » READ MORE

Portable fireplace? Sure, why not?

By Doug Aamoth

created on: 07/31/08

It was only a matter of time, huh? For a mere $3,300 you, too, can carry a briefcase-sized fireplace between the home, the office, the kids' soccer game, wherever!

And when Conmoto, the company that makes the TravelMate Mobile Fireplace, says "wherever," they mean "wherever". You can use this thing "on the carpet, on the dining table, next to the sofa, on the terrace, or in the garden." Try that with a space heater!

How To Remove Soot and Smoke Stains From Your Fireplace.

By Chrisjob

The winter time is the right time for nestling besides the glow from your fireplace. Unfortunately, the escape of smoke can often leave deposits on the stones or bricks on your hearth, To clean them, simply dissolve Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) into a bucket of water, following the directions on the package, then scrub it down with a firm-bristled brush. Repeat as necessary, then rinse.

Gas Fireplaces. Alternatives to fake logs?

By incubus_of_habit

We're finishing our basement into a 'poor mans' loft space. We're staining the concrete floors, leaving a lot of the ceiling exposed, possibly putting in a concrete-topped built in desk in the office area.

On one side of the basement we have a massive original brick fireplace. We've decided to get a gas insert. We chose the plainest/cleanest insert we could find (not a fan of the brass/wrought iron/etc.)

The only thing that really bugs me about it » READ MORE

How to have a fire without the heat.

By DIY Maven

The one bad thing about warm summer nights is that using the fireplace is probably out of the question. But what if you want that inviting, romantic glow? Do you stoke up the logs and crank up the air-conditioning? Of course not; you get a Himalayan Rock Salt Lamp from the Victorian Fireplace Shop and stick one in your hearth for the ‘fiery glow’ you’ve been missing. Beside providing atmosphere, the substance from which they are constructed is cl » READ MORE
