Vintage Doors into Tabletops?

By charlo

I have these two beautiful vintage doors. I want to turn them into tabletops.

created at: 2009-06-30

I have most of it figured out. The legs will come from here: http://www.tablelegsonline.com/shop/20-htype-legs-p-361.html?cPath=8_289

What I'm unsure of is how to finish the top. I don't want to use a slab of glass laid over. I'd like to do some version of using lacquer, glaze, finish of some sort to create a thick, clear finish that makes the surface flat (ie. fills i » READ MORE

Fireplace Help

By 374 lbs

I have a fireplace in my apartment that, until recently, had a brass insert with glass doors. It looked similar to the photo below. I removed it because brass just isn't my style but I need to put something else in its place.

created on: 12/02/08

I would like to make something myself and I would like for it to look modern and simplistic. I don't use my fireplace so it doesn't have to be fireproof... I just want to keep the soot in and my cats out while maintaining » READ MORE

Weekend Project: Disappearing Trap Door Pool Table

By Doug Aamoth

Summer's over, the kids are back in school, and weekends are starting to slow down a bit, right? So why not take the weekend to dig yourself a giant rectangular enclosure right in the middle of your living room, add a big lifting mechanism, and drop in a nice pool table?

I have no idea how hard it'd be to set up a system like this, but I'm pretty sure you'd want to know what's directly below the floorboards and be confident that you'd » READ MORE

Chic Door Stops

By lilybee

When it's flop-on-the-tile-floor, fantasize-about-sprinklers-hot, opening every window to create a lovely cooling cross breeze is the best idea ever. But at our place we get a 5 minute drum solo of slamming doors with even the slightest breeze. So we have a collection of things propping the doors open. Like this.

Now crusty old boots are a 'look'. But I've been searching for something a little more chic. CraftyClaire over at Make and Do a » READ MORE

Looking for Rustic Doors

By Log Homes

I spent a better part of a year looking for rustic doors for my log home. I never did find them. So I started my own interior doors company.

created on: 03/16/08

Our rustic doors are constructed using a unique lag bolt assembly. Long steel lags are bored and installed through the door edges to secure the stiles and rails. These bolts are far stronger than wood dowels used by most manufacturers and guard against joint separation caused by changes in temperatu » READ MORE

Need Your Clever Ideas

By ModHomeEcTeacher

We just made a clean sweep of the greenery and holiday stuff and the same old dilemma is staring me in the face.  I won't divulge how long we've lived in this house, but will share that I have never been able to figure out what to do with these two big sliding glass monsters.  The first image is looking from the front hallway right on through the dining room and smack dab onto the porch.  The second image is in the breakfast area off of the kitch » READ MORE

Cool NEW Doors for your Mid-Century Modern Crib

By eichler

Vintage modern homeowners interested in restoring their mid-century modern home have typically been very limited when it comes time to replace or restore the front door and/or door hardware that originally came with their home.

Unfortunately, the pre-drilled doors or blanks sold at big-chain hardware stores or your local hardware store don't blend well with the aesthetic of an Eichler home or any retro ranch style home built in the 1950s a » READ MORE

Extreme Vinyl Make Over With 303

By DIY Maven

Why the manufacturers of 303 Aerospace Protectant™ don’t make it available in every big box and hardware store in the country, astounds me. It is the absolute best way to give new life to vinyl. Around the house that includes vinyl windows, doors, shutters, patio furniture, spa and pool covers and the like. To illustrate 303's extraordinary ability, take a look at my in-law’s sun-bleached front door before an application of 303, which consis » READ MORE

Slab Door Augmentation

By DIY Maven

Got flat doors? Want a little enhancement? Check out Ron Hazelton’s tutorial on DIY door augmentation. It’s a relatively simple process that gives slab doors a recessed panel look. Note: Ron assumes some woodworking ability for the DIYer; however, it’s still a nice tutorial.

An alternative to Ron's molding idea is to apply (with finish nails) recessed door panels directly to the flat door for a dimensional look. Recessed panels are often so » READ MORE

Cubicle Door Increases Productivity, Isolation From Annoying Co-Workers

By bruno

Offering 'maximum coverage for cubicle privacy', the Cubedoor is an adustable, solid fabric barrier you can install in your cube opening to get a little privacy:

Seems like a cool idea, although I'm not sure how much privacy you can achieve when people can just look over your door and talk to you. Oh well...

How the pros paint doors two sides at a time

By alexrussell

Painting a door can be a chore, but there's an easier way to do it than painting one side at a time. Some pros I've worked with have a great way to keep doors upright, so they can paint both sides of a door in one go. Here's what they do.

The only tools you'll need aside from painting materials are a cordless drill or screwdriver, and a hammer. The extra materials are a scrap board and a few finish nails at least 2 inches long.

The "I can't paint" closet door Rocket

By Nimue

If I can manage painting a rocket, then you can too.  Maybe not a rocket, but you get the idea.  I printed out a simple rocket clip art design, eyeballed it while using a level to pencil lines on the doors, held my breath and started painting inside the lines...and managed to not make it ugly.  It's not 'Art', but it's not bad for paint-o-phobic like me.  Hopefully this will encourage someone else to try something they're been afraid to.

Make your door more useful...magnet style.

By jrysavy

closet door in my son's room, and no, he doesn't like Chino Latino

You could do this on any door, but it worked out really well on the closet doors in my kid's room. The sheet metal is held on by 6 screws and then to avoid warping, glued with some industrial type glue. Pretty cool and pretty darn useable.
