Totally DIYable Blackboard Clock

By DIY Maven

Blackboard Clock

Talk about multitasking! This new item at Graham and Green is not only a clock, it's a chalkboard and a bulletin board as well. It also costs £52.50 or about 74 bucks to we Yanks. However, a very acceptable knock-off could be put together with a square of inexpensive MDF, a bit of black chalkboard paint and some clock works » READ MORE

By DIY Maven

The Passe Partout Photo Frame by Box 32 consists of 12 small photo frames and a center block to house the clock-works. DIYable? Thinking about the supplies available at my local craft store, I'd say yes. The original, available through dutchbydesign.com, will set you back about 63 bucks US.

DIYable Coffee Table Bookshelf

By DIY Maven

The inspiration for Matt Carr's ingenious biblioteca bookshelf came from two found vintage coffee tables which he reconfigured into a bookshelf. His very cool 44 x 37 x 11" creation will set you back $725, but I'm thinking if you have or come across some unwanted coffee tables (a note for your next Good Will shopping trip) you could get handy with a saw and make one of your own. Maybe use some dowels to hold the feet to the table below and add » READ MORE

Totally DIYable Chalkboard Clock!!!

By DIY Maven

Check out this $78 chalkboard clock available at Urban Materials. How easy would this be to replicate? Seriously?! Pop a cheap old clock out of its frame–if it has one–paint it over with chalkboard paint and give its hands a coat of white and you’re done. Okay, so this expensive version also has a magnetic face, but still...a chalkboard clock....how cool is that??!!

P.S. Another alternative = A square of plywood or MDF + some clock works » READ MORE

Sporadic Wine Racks....DIYable?

By DIY Maven

Modern Cellar’s Sporadic Wall Panels turn wine bottles into sculpture. Elegant, lovely and simple. So simple, in fact, I’m thinking they’d be easily diy-able. No? The website doesn’t offer any info as to the prices of the ready-made versions, but I’m guessing they aren’t cheap. For all you interested wood workers out there, the dimensions ARE included in the individual panels’ descriptions.

Simple, and completely DIYable, Box Shelves.

By Chrisjob

It's amazing how such a simple design and contruction works so well. A bit of MDF with a router run over the edges, some screws mounted to a cleat (as you can see in the photo), and they're yours for, what?, 20 dollars?

Religious Bookshelf

By DIY Maven

Juxtaposed: Religion was designed by Mike and Maaike. The shelf brings together 7 of the world’s most influential religious texts. Note how they are at the same level. Very cool. Offered in a limited edition of 50 it’s available through blankblank for a hefty $2500, which, I’m assuming includes the texts. As usual, I’m left to consider its DIY-ability. A big ol’ slab of wood, a table saw & dado blades for roughing it out and then a dedicated » READ MORE

A List of DIYable Dad's Day Gifts!

By DIY Maven

Last year Makezine put together a great list of DIYable Father's Day presents that needs a re-visit. Oh, sure, the items catalogued might first sound like the typical Dad's Day offerings, but these clever creations are made out of some very unusual materials. For instance, how about making an LED photo frame out of popsicle sticks? Or maybe a wallet made out of an inner tube? If your pops is into BBQ, maybe a smoker made out of a garbage can is » READ MORE

Wall Art/Furniture...DIYable???

By DIY Maven

Designer John Nouanesing’s Fix It On The Wall Furniture is a piece of art and, when you need it, a coffee table and four cushions, and I’m thinking it’s DIYable. Picture it, you fabricate your cushions, table top and legs, and then you trace their images on a piece of plywood. (Maybe even sandwich two together to get some depth.) You cut out their shapes with a jigsaw and then apply that to another piece of plywood. A couple coats of paint and » READ MORE

Greenrrroof Animal Home.

By Chrisjob

These vegetatively-capitaled Greenrrroof pet houses are a beautiful alternative to those Little-Tikes, tan, plastic things they sell at the discount stores. Stephanie Rubin's designs are made of natural cedar, no-VOC paints, and beeswax water sealant. Expensive, yes, but the including diagrams and simple but clever design make them totally DIYable.

Wall-Hanging Plant Holder.

By Chrisjob

The Makezine blog points out this living art/seed starter: a wall-hanging plant holder from Opulent Items. The plants are watered by the included reservoir, and the plants naturally grow forward (out), because that's whence the light comes.

The included diagram (below) makes it seem like they want you to DIY one; which is totally preferable to dropping $250 on a manufactured model.

DIYable ‘Woolbubbles’ Wall Decor

By DIY Maven

Designer Christel Månsson has created Woolbubbles, which are wool-wrapped ‘sound absorbing textile wall elements.’ There isn’t any info as far as cost, but I’m thinking a jigsaw, stapler, plywood, batting and some lovely wool fabric and you’d have the fixings for some very effective knock offs! AND to make your job even easier, the website offers a PDF of the measurements of the shapes pictured above!  Via Design Crack.

Melted Toy Soldier Bowl.

By Chrisjob

Designer Thorsten Van Elten created the 44" diameter  "War Bowl" from melted plastic soliders. The $225 price tag warrants a DIY attempt: perhaps you could warm the army men in the oven, then flip the softened sheet onto a large bowl for formation? Thanks, BLTD!

Is this folding ‘Olivia’ chair DIYable?

I say, ‘Yes.’ A wooden folding chair and coat hanger and a little engineering and you just might have something. Would it be worth your trouble? Again I say, ‘Yes.’ The original from reestore is £120; that’s 247 bucks to we Yanks.

The Totally DIY-able Clothing Butler!

By DIY Maven

The CMYK clothing butler is the brain-child of CMYK Sweden. According the company’s website, it’s not yet available for purchase, but for a DIYer with a jig saw, who cares? It’s totally DIYable! Three-quarter inch cabinet grade plywood (because it doesn’t have voids in the laminations) would be my first choice.

P.S. Wood workers who have a router and trammel could have some fun with this one. And speaking of routers, I’d probably run a r » READ MORE

Another DIY-able Bookshelf!

By DIY Maven

A 2" x 6" (or 8") and a jig saw is just about all you need to make this leaning book shelf by Mark Reigelman. And, if you DIY'd it, you'd be the first on your block to have such a thing, because Reigelman's 'Books Shelve' is only a prototype. Via Apartment Therapy.

TOTALLY DIY-able Felt Wine Rack!

By DIY Maven

This six pack wine rack from Elsewares is unbelievably clever. Not just because it’s made of renewable and recyclable materials, but because of how it’s constructed. Made of four pieces of 17" x 5" wool felt, it’s totally DIY-able!! To make it, I’d first sew the center two pieces of heavy fabric together in three equidistant rows and then sew the outer two pieces of fabric to the center two pieces in four equidistant rows. To keep the rack’s shap » READ MORE
