DIY Closet Build

By NCavillones

We have that rarest of specimens in a NYC apartment--a walk-in closet. Our only other closet is a narrow affair in the bedroom. Awhile back, we built out the walk-in closet with a Rubbermaid System, in order to better utilize the space. Despite this, my husband's clothes threatened to take over the floor of the closet, mostly because we were using hanging fabric shelves for his clothes, which don't offer much in the way of support. We had the sam » READ MORE

How to store your warm weather clothes.

By DIY Maven

Now that Mother Nature has turned her attention to fall, you might be thinking about swapping your summer clothes for something a bit more toasty. But what’s the best way to store all those warm weather togs? Real Simple breaks it down like this:

1. Empty the pockets and wash and dry or dry clean everything you plan to store.

2. Of those items coming back from the dry cleaner, make sure to remove the dry-cleaner bags.

3. Store your clothes in cool » READ MORE

My (kind of) organized closet!

By anjelicat First post, hooray! I just finished getting all of my clothing back into my closet (60% of it eventually ends up on my bed/floor), so I figured i'd take some pictures and share.

I re-did my bedroom probably about two years ago, but it still makes me proud. I decided to opt out of pre-made storage units for my closet and instead design it in a way that I could really get the most use out of it. Everything I used was either purchased at Home De » READ MORE

More Closet Organizing Tips.

By Chrisjob

Shopping Blog Shefinds suggests: "organizing your closet doesn't have to be a nightmare. If that dark hole of disorganization is not the sanctuary it could and should be, then you've come to the right place. Turn a can of sardines into a spacious stylist's mecca and spend merely a fraction of what you'd pay for a custom-built closet system. We've found the products to » READ MORE

Hangers.com. Who knew?

By beccajo

Hey! Guess what they sell on Hangers.com ?

answer:

Hangers!

Metal, wood, velvet, and even those plastic ones you get from department stores.

Get rid of the strange melange of hangers kickin' around your closet, and replace them all with matching, mongrammed ones.

Mommie dearest would be so proud.

Clean Your Closet and Make Space for More 'Good'.

By Chrisjob

Blogger Edith Yeung offers sound advice for cleaning not only your storage closet, but your mental/emotional 'closet' as well.

Edith suggests:

Throw it away when:

  1. You don’t feel good about it.

  2. You don’t like it.

  3. You don’t feel comfortable wearing it.

  4. You don’t remember you had it.

  5. You have not worn it even once in the past 12 months.

  6. It doesn’t fit you anymore.

  7. The only reason you keep because it is expensive.

Day 41: Dealing With A Staunch Character.

By egellia
Johnny said that after work he’d show me how to j.c. the closet proper. Set me up and teach me how. Because as much as he’s pretending it’s okay, it’s just a closet, it’s driving him mad the mess I made in there—

Oh, all right, I’ll show you a picture. Here:

Oh, what the hell, have three:

But you better appreciate it, because it’s too light in there for flash and too dark without it, so I had to find Johnny’s work light in the bas » READ MORE

No Big Love On THIS Compound

By egellia
I asked Johnny to sum up the how-tos for me again this morning, because he was not exactly crystal-clear on the finer points of the procedure yesterday. So he did.

It goes pretty much like he said yesterday: slathe it, press the tape, cut the tape, slathe it again (but, like everything else about homeownership, you really can’t know what that means until you’ve done it). And then, before he hopped out of the car he gave me one last bit of advice: » READ MORE

Day 39: That's Enough Of That

By egellia
Oy yoy yoy. If you live with somebody you love, don’t smoke, okay? Or, actually, go ahead and smoke all you want, just make sure you always have a spare carton in the freezer.

Because I don’t really care about the cancer or the smell or any of the rest of it – that’s all your body and your stink and I’d just as soon keep my laws off the whole shebang. But sheesh, a smoker without smokes is a pain in the toosh – and now that’s my too » READ MORE

Day 37: Plugging Away

By egellia
Every day this week I’ve been meaning to get started on the closet. But every day this week I've forgotten to ask Johnny before he left for work what “getting started on the closet” might entail. And by the time he would get home, I’d have found something else to do that day – so then why bother asking?

Finally, this morning, I remembered. He wasn’t all the way awake yet, but I remembered to ask him and then it was his job to remember » READ MORE

Day 34: Didn't I Tell You, Tina...?

By egellia
I got into the knob-less closet.

I didn't get a chance to start doing anything around here today until before I knew it Johnny was calling to be picked up from work. The weather is too gross and sticky for staining or painting, too gross and sticky for any work harder than staining or painting, and Goody (who, by the way, is pissed at having been locked down celler for the weekend) wouldn't let me make my very first day back also be my very first » READ MORE

Day 29, Project 12: Happy, Nana?

By egellia
I don't have a "before" picture -- because it turns out when you check the box that says "delete photos from camera after copying", it actually, you know, does. Same thing happens when you highlight all the pictures in your folder and hit "delete." Go figure.

So I don't have a before picture and I don't have as many other pithily-commented illustrations as I'd planned (and maybe, just maybe, when I deleted all my photos after spending an hour car » READ MORE

Looking on the Bright Side of a Disaster.

By DesigningMom

Have you ever thought about a custom closet, but were afraid of how much it would cost?  Well be afraid no more!  Get some graph paper and a pencil.  Take measurements of your closet, both walls & floor and graph it all.  I use small (ten squares to the inch) graph paper so I have each square represent three inches.

Decide how much space (width) you need for slacks, dresses & coats and then for shirts & skirts.  This will tell you how many » READ MORE

A Blast From The Past Craft: Pomanders

By DIY Maven

Remember pomanders? You might have made one when you were ten years old or so, sticking an orange full of whole cloves. It was a tedious project for a kid. After I re-did my front closet a while back, I started thinking about these fragrant balls, as I wanted to add one as a cherry on the top of my make over. So, I took a trip to my grocery store and bought the necessary equipment. Here’s a refresher too-easy-for-a-how-to how-to just in case you » READ MORE

What do I do with an ugly util closet?

By clutch

I have an 81 x 81 utility closet opening that I need to do something with. I had some ugly folding doors but because of a broken washing machine I had to cut out part of the wall. Lucky me. And also because of a backed up sewer I had to rip up new carpeting. Ewwwww

What can I do with this now? I don't want more of the folding doors. But I need to keep it ventilated because the furnace and water heater is back there also. This is a hallway so ther » READ MORE
