'Fanaway' fan features retractable blades
By Doug Aamoth
Ceiling fans: a necessary evil in most urban dwellings. I don't happen to be bothered by them, but plenty of people aren't too keen on having a giant, many-armed apparatus as the focal point of their ceiling.
The Fanaway is an attractive light fixture that hides retractable fan blades until the fan's switch is flipped on. At that time, the fixture begins spinning and the centrifugal force caused by the rotation causes the fan blades to protrud » READ MORE
Basement ceilings (Polystyrene tiles - cheap and dirty)
By faustHey everyone,
Recently we moved into new house . And I decided to build a new office for myself in the basement (working from home - dreams come true :-)
It will take a while before we'll finish the whole basement , but for now I just found a nice corner to start from. The walls, floors - everything was done traditional way . The last thing was to decide what to do with the ceilings. One option was to install the drop tiles, but since my ceilin » READ MORE
Ceiling tiles as canvas, and why art teachers ROCK!
By DIY Maven
Have some old ceiling tiles laying around? You might want to think about using them as ‘canvases’. That’s just what art instructor Carrie, known as orangesoc12 on Flickr did. Although, her tiles weren’t just laying around; they were actually in the ceiling of her classroom. She had her 8th grade students take them down and draw on them--using Georgia O'Keeffe for inspiration--and then they put them back up. You can see more examples of he » READ MORE
How to remove a popcorn ceiling.
By DIY Maven
Of the few things I don't like about my house, the popcorn ceilings are at the bottom of the list. And, after watching this video on DIY Network that explains the process, I think I just might remove them from the list altogether. (Sanding overhead? Yeah, that's fun.) But, for you intrepid souls who just can't stand the bumps, the process seems fairly straightforward. According to DIY Network, you might need some or all of the following supplie » READ MORE
Alternatives to Drop Ceiling panels?
By incubus_of_habitWe're finishing our basement into a 'poor mans loft'. By that, I'd like to keep it a bit 'as-is'. We've stained the concrete floor, are going to leave the steel i-beams and brick fireplace exposed. And while I like the look of exposed ceiling joists, this is an OLD house, so the ceiling is a bit of a mess. I'd like to put in a floating drop ceiling (leaving a few feet gap around the edge). I want to leave some of the joists exposed, but have a mo » READ MORE
Bedroom Wall Woes
By shimmyhopI have an interesting problem. Interesting for others, but driving me batty.
I have moved into an apartment that is the old Mayor's mansion in the town I live in. It really is a super cool space. Large rooms, hardwood floors, floor to ceiling windows, a grand entrance.... Just great. EXCEPT the master bedroom. Someone, I have no clue who, felt that putting a chair rail around the room with popcorn ceiling style stucco stuff on the lower half » READ MORE
Giving your kitchen cozier look (with Antique Copper Tin look ceiling tiles)
By faustHello everyone,
Just wanted to share with you the details of one of our latest projects. We installed PVC glue on ceiling tile in the kitchen ceilings.

First - we snapped a chalk line through the main focal point in that room - light fixture.

Then we applied a glue (Contact Cement) to the ceilings along this line with a foam roller
-
Glue was applied to the back of the tile (it is a good idea to apply glue to three-fo » READ MORE
How to cover those stained drop tiles once and for all
By faustHey everyone. Here I'd like to show you how did we covered old ugly drop tiles my friend had in his office with a new ugly ones (at least the new ones weren't stained :)
This is how this office's ceiling looked like before we started.
...about half an hour later.
We just attached PVC glue on ceiling tiles to the old drop tiles one by one (used them as a support)
For that purpose we used PL construction adhesive

If you live in a very small apartment this might be the solution you are looking for. A bed that you can hide in the ceiling when it's not in use.
Hole in Your Textured Ceiling? Fill ‘er Up!
By DIY Maven
The only thing more unsightly than a hole in a textured ceiling is a badly patched hole in a textured ceiling. Follow these very easy steps and make those holes and patch jobs disappear.
Note: this process works best for average-sized nail and screw holes. The one in the example was approximately 1/4" in diameter. Also, the ceiling and all supplies were white, but because of light conditions, they look grey.
