How to Turn a CD Spindle into a Light

By DIY Maven

Kayte over on Craftstylish went all MacGyver-y and turned a CD spindle into a decorative light. This one involves electricity, so care should be taken, but other than that....easy peasy! To make one of your own, you'll need to assemble the following:

  • an empty CD spindle
  • a small handsaw
  • 6 feet of electrical cord
  • wire strippers or a small sharp scissors
  • a plug
  • a socket
  • a rotary light switch
  • a screwdriver
  • electrical tape
  • a chandelier-type bulb

A New Twist on the Recycled Jewel Case Lamp.

By Chrisjob

Over the past two years, Curbly has featured plenty of clever reuses for CD Jewel Cases: from a mini-greenhouse to a calendar or wall art (and 13 other ideas).

And certainly, if you've been about the DIY blogosphere at all, you've run into a fair share of how-tos for creating lamps out of jewel cases, or even used CDs themselves. So, here's another simple and beautiful entry from Make Grow Gather.

Nick and Norah Paper Flower CD Case

By lilybee

In honour of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, (which b.t.w is awesome and adorable) here's an uber-cute and COMPLETELY simple way to wrap mix-tapes (sigh... remember tapes?) for your best girl (or guy)

created on: 10/06/08

You'll need:

  • A square bit of paper, 12"x12" (or 30cm) I've used velum scrapbook pages, 'cause they were exactly the right size and purdy.
  • A protractor. Like in school!
  • some scissors and a pencil

  • a carefully thought out mix cd with wh » READ MORE

Make a Mini Greenhouse from Recycled CD Cases.

By Chrisjob

This clever photo led me to this excellet tiny recycled greenhouse. What a use for the boxes of CD cases that I refuse to throw away. (If you wanna make one, don't go buy blank cases...I'll gladly mail you four.)

Materials: Four compact disc cases

1. Remove the front (the clear part) from three of the cases.

2. Tape or glue the three cases in a box shape, and then add the final case on the back, as in the photo.

3. Help your little seedling » READ MORE

CD Garden Sculpture

By DIY Maven

The CD recycling topic keeps on a’ rolling! Today’s clever installment comes from Sally J. over at The Practical Archivist. She took the above photo of a CD/DVD LP sculpture located in her neighbor’s yard. At the height of summer heat, the LP’s might get a bit melt-y, but I’m thinking that would only give the sculpture a more organic look.

How to make a lamp out of old CDs.

By DIY Maven

This is one of the reasons why I LOVE Curbly! The other day I wrote up a top ten list about using old CD’s to make stuff. Meg over at The Consumerist picked up the post and one of their readers posted a link in THAT post to this how-to post which I’m now posting here. Okay, maybe that explanation was unnecessary and a bit confusing....but how absolutely cool is this DIY CD lamp??????

Also check out Jim's C.D. Lamp #2 for an alternative.

How to Make a Folded-Paper CD Case

By DIY Maven

Instead of paying good cash for cd cases, which eventually break and end up in a landfill, how about creating your own, unique folded-paper cd cases that are biodegradable and take up a fraction of the space?

The Props:

8 ½" by 11" paper

a cd

a computer (optional)

labels (optional)

The Procedure:

1. Center a cd, which you’ll be using as a guide, at the top of a sheet of paper, as shown.

2. Fold in sides of paper to sides of cd.

Make Photo Art With CDs

By gregoryjohnson

water dropsBecause of such a positive response to the Make Photo Art with Water and Oatmeal blog entry, this additional entry on photo art has been created.

The rainbow-like images seen here are close-up photos of a CD tilted in just the right angle to catch the light.

The light source for these images was a typical overhead office area florescent light fixture with four full-length bulbs.

The CD and camera were held as still as possible during the » READ MORE

"Mobile" Home - a mobile made from old CDs

By gregoryjohnson

Now that cassettes, LPs, and even CDs have become obsolete, what are we to do with them? DIY Maven came up with a very creative solution for making use of old LPs. So, here's a suggestion of what to do with some of those old CDs: make a mobile out of them!

What You Need

  • some old CDs, about 8 to 10 should do unless you are really ambitious
  • string, fishing line, or strong thread
  • thin sticks, chopsticks might work
  • glue, to keep the kn » READ MORE
