How To: Roy G. Biv Cake.

By Chrisjob

Kaitlin from WhiskKid has got a few things figured out: 1) cakes should always be created from layers; 2) the more thin layers, the better, as they allow for more frosting; and 3) if you're gonna have crazy layers to support the frosting, you might as well make those substrates amazing.

'Happy Birthday' Cake Mold

By DIY Maven

Forget the buttercream, this cake writes the message itself. Made of food grade silicone, the mold is heat proof up to 300 degrees. You might balk at the $32 price tag, but it'll save you in icing and time. (Not to mention the aggravation when your pastry bag decides to blow a hole right in the middle of the ‘P's’ and your cake is suddenly drenched in purple icing because your niece insisted on ‘the writing part’ be in purple to match her Princes » READ MORE

Acorn Cakelet Pan

By DIY Maven

New from Williams-Sonoma is their absolutely darling Acorn Cakelet Pan. The detail in each of the 18 acorns it bakes is remarkable. I'm imagining little acorn corn breads served with jambalya or chilli this fall. Mmmmm. Perfect for cakes as well, just pop the little devils out of the pan and dust them with powdered sugar for a no-fuss yet fancy desert. The pan overall measures 15 1/4" x 11 3/4" x 1" high while the acorns it produces are 2 1/4" » READ MORE

Simpsons Cupcakes.

By Chrisjob

Everyone's favorite animated family get a fondant facelift. Veronica writes, "My niece Yana is celebrating her fourth, not fifth birthday (She's a giant!) on April 6, and as a present, I made some Simpsons cupcakes! I have never tried making traditional fondant before and was honestly intimidated by it. After 'bugging' Gel Colet with questions on gumpaste, royal icing and fondant (Thanks and sorry Gel!), I decided to not do any of the aforem » READ MORE
