Ikea Hack: The Gorm Shelving Bench.

By Chrisjob

created at: 2009-11-07

The Gorm Shelving System from Ikea is a unique offering - it's made of real fir, rather than Ikea's might-as-well-have-invented-it laminate-coated compressed fiberboard recipe. Cool, but the downside? Sometimes softwoods simply ain't straight, and your Gorm ends up a little crooked.

No worries, says Randofo. I'll just make a bench outta it.

Simple Upholstery You Can Do

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-08-05

Photo Images: Velvet & Linen

The path to fabulous sites is not usually a deliberate one. Sometimes you just happen to fall into a blog that you didn't dream existed. First, I tripped on Cococozy, a new favorite, and this gorgeous  oval turquoise tufted ottoman. Then, I was stopped dead in my tracks when I started re » READ MORE

Monday Night Upholstery: Slow and Steady

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-07-29

Monday night Janet finished upholstering her salvaged bench. Talk about "student teaching the teacher", she paid such close attention to every detail of her rehab, it was a good reminder for me to slow down a bit to experience the experience. Ha!

MNU: Boxed and Corded Cushion at Home

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-07-23

Viewing someone's project out of context doesn't always convey it's fabulousness. In my Monday Night Upholstery post yesterday, there was no way to understand how the green cushion would look at home. This morning she sent me this photo of her handmade, three button boxed and corded bench cushion. She can now make boxed and corded cushions whenever she wants to.  Teaching to fish...

I want a new workbench

By tmgeorgo

I'd like to get a new workbench for my garage.  The bench I've been using for the past four years is a leftover from the previous owner of my house and is a fairly sturdy DIY version but with limited storage and power.  He/she took three particle board vanities and screwed them together, then fastened a thick sheet of MDF across the top of all three.

I'd like to have one with a nice wood top, an open shelf and some drawers underneath, and a pe » READ MORE

How To Turn an Ugly Coffee Table Into an Upholstered Bench

By ModHomeEcTeacher

What do you do with an old coffee table with a dinged up or stained top?  Turn it into a soft, lovely, upholstered bench for your hallway, end of your bed or as an upholstered ottoman in front of the sofa.  This pine bench was $13.99 at Goodwill (a little overpriced in my opinion).  With some  fresh new fabric, supplies and these simple instructions, it morphed into a different creature.

Did you wet yourself or did you sit in something?

By DIY Maven

Even if people have never asked you that question, if you’ve accidentally sat on a wet bench, you know they’re thinking it. To avoid such embarrassing speculation and ensure a dry bottom, a cadre of designers have put their collective creativity together and come up with The Rolling Bench. It’s fitted with a handle on the side, which, when you crank, rotates the seat revealing the dry underside. Via.

Bench Made of 1600 Pencils

By Doug Aamoth

Pencil BenchLook around at everything in your office right now. If you had to make a bench out of one item, repeated 1600 times, what would it be?

Pencils, of course!

This bench was created by Boex 3D Creative Solutions after a discussion about how to design furniture out of one simple office supply.

Is it just me, or does it actually look kind of comfortable? Boex is located in the UK and is apparently selling the bench for £1200 ($2450) but maybe you coul » READ MORE

The Wild Wave Bench

By DIY Maven

My favorite shape is the ammonite-like swirl. (Is it weird to have a favorite shape?) Anyway, when I saw this Wild Wave Beach available through Manhattan Loft, I swooned a little bit. The retailer compares its form to the Clef musical symbol, but I only see my beloved ammonite spiral. The very cool Wild Wave, which is available in various fabrics, starts at 989 bucks and rises, depending upon your fabric choice.

Park Bench Project: Completed!

By DIY Maven

A while back I posted a how-to on using wrapping paper to enlarge scaled drawings. My inspiration to turn to Hallmark was prompted by a cedar park bench MWT was making. Well, this weekend he finished it, and I thought I’d post a pic of the completed project.

On the Curbly woodworkers scale, MWT would label this project ‘easy’ for an experienced woodworker, and ‘moderate’ for those somewhat new to the craft but wanting a challenge. As always whe » READ MORE

Build a Modern Planter Bench

By Chrisjob

"The hardest part of building a wood bench is ensuring that its legs are sturdy and well attached. So to make it easy to build this 10-foot-long bench, we designed a bench top that rests on a pair of oversize ceramic pots. Add plants or trees to enrich the look; we used New Zealand flax.

The bench frame and top are made of 2-by-6 decking. (We used redwood, but you could substitute cedar or pressure-treated lumber.) For a comfortable seating h » READ MORE
