DIY Modern Pop Pumpkin Centerpiece.
By Chrisjob
I love fall, but I simply can't get into acorns and dried corn husks in my home decor. So, this pop-ish pumpkin centerpiece. A bit of paint, a bit of tape, a lot of autumn, and a bunch of fun. Try it this weekend, and it'll last you until Thanksgiving...I mean, as long as your pumpkins do.
How To: Shrunken Apple Heads.
By Chrisjob
I got The Amazing Apple Book for Christmas 1993, and I adored each of its pages. My favorite project included carving a face in a fresh, ripe apple and leaving it out to dry and shrivel into a little fruit flavored shrunken face...though my parents always made me store mine in the basement, and they usually caught a coat of mold.
But, Floral Showers seems to have this perfect fall project down. Super fun!

How-To: "Snowflake" Pumpkins.
By ChrisjobA paper pumpkin: easy, fun, inexpensive, festive, and.....asymmetrical. Even the steadiest of scissor-wielders can't get those chubby sides quite even. Unless, of course, you borrow a technique from a different holiday.

Turns out, the easy-paper snowflake folding technique can work wonders on jack-o-lanterns, and, presumably, on all sorts of fall flair. Click here to head to MerMag for an easy photo how-to.
DIY Apple Chips!
By ChrisjobCome fall time, apples simply seem to just find themselves in our kitchens. From sales at the super market, to orchard picking excursions, or from the trees in your own yard and neighborhood, autumn is abundant apple time.

And, apparently, it's quite easy to use 'em in bulk by making your own apple chips, perfect for adding to granola or cereal or just munching for a healthy snack. Here's how.

DIY PhotoPumpkin Carving Techniques.
By Chrisjob
I remember the first halloween that 'art' pumpkin carving books became widely available...everyone in my neighborhood carved the same three patterns...witch-on-a-broom profile, three ghosts with boo, or cutesy scarecrow face. So, while they weren't the old triangle-eyes and toothy smiles of yesteryear, the variety was as hollow as the pumpkins themselves.
Certainly, modern books have improved on the patterns, but sometimes, you just need a cus » READ MORE

Autumn Garden Checklist
By lilybee
Only a few days left till the official start of Autumn/Fall. BHG has a checklist of stuff to do in your garden. Or at least intend to do and not quite get round to. It includes:
- Lower the height on your mower. Grass grows more slowly in fall, but it still needs to be trimmed to prepare for winter. A lower cutting height helps the soil dry out more quickly in spring.
- Feed the birds. Don't forget your feathered friends -- their food supply » READ MORE
Candy Corn Tote
By SilverWing
My new favorite fall accessory! I love tote bags, as I'm always needing to carry things with me, be they books, craft projects, or otherwise. I loved the way this bag turned out. I added the "chocolate" candy corn color to give it a little more punch. ^^ It's a simple single crochet stich done with four different skeins of yarn.

How To Roast Pumpkin Seeds.
By ChrisjobGet hip to the pumpkin's built-in recycling feature with this classic technique.

1/2 pound of pumpkin seeds, about 1 1/2 cups (I prefer to buy the green, hulled version from Latin markets, where they’re known as pepitas)

1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional: add 1/3 teaspoon smoked paprika)

DIY Autumn.
By ChrisjobThe weather is playing tricks on you: the leaves are sorta changing, and it's getting dark at 7:30, yet it remains 95-degrees throughout most of the day. Check out Betz White's attempt to make up some fall on her own.

How to Make Vegan Candy Corn.
By ChrisjobDesire to enter October's Curbly Challenge, but can't bear to use real candy corn, which contains gelatin?
Fret no longer. The Urban Housewife offers a vegan recipe, which uses vegan margarine and powdered soy milk for structure.

How To Make A Candy Corn Creature.
By ChrisjobInspired by October's Curbly Challenge, I decided I'd like a couple candy friends floating around this autumn. You should make some, too.

Materials
- Candy corn
- Paper clips
- Wire cutters and/or needlenose pliers
- Pen or marker
- Microwave (optional)
1. Select a prime piece of candy corn.
2. Give 'em a face. Mine is smiley, but yours doesn't have to be so glad. Invoke all your prime pumpkin-carving skills.
3. Use the paper clips to create arms and legs. Cut t » READ MORE

Modern Potpourri?
By ChrisjobI really get into the change of the seasons, and though it's not autumn yet, it's gonna be quite soon.

I appreciate a seasonally-scented home, but dried flowers and nut-ish things don't really suit my design aesthetic. I have pretty bad allergies, so only the natural-ist of candles are safe, but you can't leave those burning for long periods of time.
So, is there a modern solution to make one's home autumnally-aromaed? Or a tricky way to hide the e » READ MORE
