Top Design----Season 2??
By DIY Maven
Last year when Bravo first announced its new show Top Design, my fingers started to tingle. Oh joy! Rapture! It would be Project Runway, only with sofas and stuff. How much better could it get? As it turned out, a lot better. TD started out promising but soon took a dive. The worst part was, as I had committed to writing next day wrap-ups for Curbly, I was forced to sit through each and every wretched episode. This being said, when I heard that
Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, The Finale: Loft Design
By DIY MavenLast night's Top Design wrap-up had to be one of the most anticlimactic finales in the history of reality t.v. Much like a visit to the dentist, I was glad when it was over.
(The next 4 pics are of Matt's loft.)

The Task
The two remaining contestants were asked to design–for themselves, acting as their own client–a 1700 square foot loft in downtown L.A. They had 2 months to plan the design, which they did at their respective homes, and 5 days to » READ MORE
TD Online Challenge #10
By DIY MavenThis week’s challenge is so stupid it doesn’t deserve a post. But, hey, in for a penny in for a pound.
TD asks contestants to "create a trophy/award to honor the winner. Use any materials you’d like, but make sure to be creative and unique." One question. Will the winner of TD actually be PRESENTED with the trophy? Let’s hope so. The prize is two very cool Todd Oldham Tube Vases.
On the up side, last week's magazine challenge resulted in a » READ MORE
Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, Week 9: Living Room Swank
By DIY Maven
Last night's episode of TD proved the cream rises to the top. Too bad it was curdled. And orange.
The Task
The three remaining designers drew on past Elle Decor magazine covers for inspiration to create a posh living room. Not Elle-like was their budget: 7500 bucks. This bit of news provoked wailing and gnashing of teeth among the contestants. Could they possibly produce a fabulous room on such a paltry sum??

TD Online Challenge #9
By DIY MavenTD is asking this week's wannabe designers to “Use a magazine to create something fabulous. Create a centerpiece; a candle holder; whatever you want!” Up for grabs for this week’s winner is a Todd Oldham Gourd Vase.
Last week’s trash to treasure challenge provoked a variety of entries. Here are some of the highlights.
Gina T’s fabulous table re-do.

Blake P's window to shoji-style panel transformation. (Easily DIY able.)

Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, Week 8: Bedroom Suite
By DIY Maven
Last night’s episode of TD proved that it should have begun with just four contestants. Okay, maybe it wouldn’t have been much of a competition, but it would have been a much better television show.
The Task
The remaining designers were asked to create a suite for a fictional boutique hotel based upon one of four elements. Goil drew fire, Andrea earth, Matt water and Carisa air. With their budget, which, again, was more than many people make in » READ MORE
TD Online Challenge 8: Trash to Treasure
By DIY Maven

Okay Curbliers, this challenge is right up our alley!! TD is asking contestants to "Turn a throw away item into something fabulous! Find something you should have thrown away long ago and resurrect it as something new and beautiful. When you are done, submit your before and after pictures so we can see the transformation." Honestly, you probably already have before and after pics of transformed trash to treasure items. Just choose one and submit » READ MORE
Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, Week 7: Chef’s Dining Room
By DIY Maven
Bravo T.V.’s Top Design seemed to turn a corner last night. It was actually good. Although, I have a feeling the turnaround has come too late, having lost their audience in the mire of crap shoveled up for our viewing pleasure earlier on in the series. Oh well.
The Task
The five remaining designers were asked to create a chef’s table for the new restaurant of a mystery chef/judge. They were told the chef preferred mid-20th century modern, arts & » READ MORE
TD Online Challenge #7: Paint-a-Plate
By DIY Maven
This week’s Top Design Online Challenge is a good one. They are asking contestants to "Take a blank plate and make it your own by painting it. Use nailpolish, paint pens, spray paint, whatever! Just make it fun and unique." The prize, which seem to be getting better as the weeks go on, is a pair of Todd Oldham sparkle end tables.
If you need a little inspiration for your project, check out these plates Todd Oldham designed for the "Design Aga » READ MORE
Curbly’s Top Design Fan(?) Club, Week 6: Party Time
By DIY MavenOkay, last night’s installment of my new favorite show to hate wasn’t half bad. The profuse use the effenheimer may have had something to do with it. Such a versatile word, don’t cha think?
The Task
The six remaining designers were broken up into two teams and were asked to design/plan a party for Bicardi Limon, which would take place in two 30' by 40' tents to be erected on the plaza of the PDC. They were to incorporate the five senses into » READ MORE
TD On-line Challenge #5: Personalize Your Car
By DIY MavenSomewhere between last week’s Top Design and this week’s wretched installment, there was a 5th on-line challenge that I missed. My bad.
TD asked contestants to personalize their cars. Out of the five entries on which to vote, Greg’s Klingon Cruiser certainly earns top marks. To achieve his Trekkie-chic cruiser, he used vinyl remnants, vinyl place mats, spray paint, hot glue and glossy photo paper. He also had a little help with Illustrator a » READ MORE
Curbly TD Rant Club Week #5: Garage Make-Over
By DIY MavenLast night’s episode of Bravo’s Top Design was a turning point for me. Somewhere in the middle, I realized I was obliged to watch it, but not because of these Curbly posts. No, it was more like being compelled to watch a car wreck. You don’t want to look, but something about the magnitude of the disaster makes you take a peek anyway.

The Task
The seven remaining designers were asked to re-design the garage of the Bell family. The Bell’s had » READ MORE
Do NOT Belittle the Pipe Cleaner!
By DIY MavenAs it’s going, most of you probably didn’t notice that yesterday there was no Top Design Roundup. That was because Wednesday night’s TD was a rerun. But don’t let the absence of a new episode keep you from visiting Bravo TV’s website and voting on last week’s on-line challenge, which, I’m sure you remember, was the pipe cleaner challenge.
Perusing the entries, the old saying about the fine line between genius and insanity comes to mi » READ MORE
Top Design On-line Challenge 4: Joy of Pipe Cleaners
By DIY MavenFor this week’s challenge, TD is asking that you "Decorate a lamp shade. Make some jewelry. The more creative, the better." The prize up for grabs this time is probably the best so far: a Todd Oldham Dot Ottoman. So, DIYers, how about fondling some pipe cleaners in the interest of design?
Last week’s "Honor Your Hero’s" challenge produced some interesting results including Kristine's Modrian-inspired "shade"

and Patrick's 2 heros for 1, Warh » READ MORE
Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, Week 4: Garage Sale Style
By DIY MavenOkay, I’ll admit it, I was still a little worried about Bravo’s TD after last week’s roundup, and now irritation has set in. I want to see the thought process behind the designs and the process of executing the designs themselves. Without them, I have no vested interest in the outcome of the tasks. But, be that as it may, I have a crush on Goil and I would love to have Todd Oldham over for tea. They will keep me watching until the last designer i » READ MORE
TD Online Challenge #3: Honor Your Design Heros
By DIY Maven
Last week’s Top Design on-line challenge was to submit a picture of a "pillow re-do." This week’s challenge is "Honor your design heros." Bravo is asking that participants "Create something that pays homage to the work of an artist or designer you admire. For example, if you admire Andy Warhol, use Campbell’s Soup labels to make a cool piece of art."
What a minute...last week it was pillows and this week they mention Andy and soup labels. Is » READ MORE
Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club Week 3: Life’s a Beach
By DIY MavenAfter last week’s episode of Bravo TV’s Top Design, worry set in. Had Bravo’s promising new reality TV show turned into a watered down HGTV offering? No! (And thank you, Bravo, for the pics of the hunky carpenters. Grrr!)

The Task
The remaining contestants were each given a surprise package that contained various beach paraphernalia, which included a post card from three different tropical locales: Miami, St. Tropez and Tahiti. They were the » READ MORE
TD Online Challenge #2: Show Us Your Pillows!
By DIY MavenLast week’s Top Design on-line challenge was to submit a picuture of "the most creative way that you display your collectibles." This week’s challenge is a "pillow re-do." Bravo is asking that participants "use any found fabric, in or around your house to create a fabulous pillow cover." The trick to win the challenge will be to interpret "fabric" loosely. Up for grabs this week is a Todd Oldham sparkle ball vase.

Curbly’s Top Design Fan Club, Week 2: Child’s Play
By DIY Maven
Last night’s episode of Bravo’ TV’s Top Design was less about drama and more about design.
The Task
The ten remaining designers were each given brief bios of clients for whom they were to design a 12' by 12' bedroom. An added challenge was that the designers had to make the beds in their rooms. Also, their furniture budget was ‘only’ $8K, which produced much vexation among the contestants as last week’s bankroll was $50K. What is a poor desig » READ MORE
