An Exquisite Example of Stop Motion Photography

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-02-17

I may behind in posting this video, but I'm gonna do it anyway, because I've fallen a little bit in love with it. The tune (superb in its own right) is Her Morning Elegance by Oren Lavie. The photography was done by Eyal Landesman and it was directed by Oren Lavie, Yuval & Merav Nathan. It's a stunning example of stop motion photography. » READ MORE

Guitar Hero 3 Crocheted Scarf

By DIY Maven

Craftster meekssandygirl whipped up this incredible scarf that just happened to be her husband's idea. He's a big fan of Guitar Hero 3 and Muse, so she embroidered the music for their tune Knights of Cydonia on a length double crochets (6 rows in black acrylic, 70 to 75 inches in length). » READ MORE

How To: DIY Speaker Wall Mounts.

By Chrisjob

created on: 01/10/09

Whether for your new 5.1 surround sound system, your cramped media room, or when just wiring your home to fill it with music, it's best to get speakers off the ground, furniture, and other resonant surfaces, and up to ear level. And since non-powered speakers are actually not heavy at all, with less than $2.00 in materials and an hour of work, it's surprisingly simple to create custom brackets for mounting them on walls and ceilings.

How To Create An Album Art Wall on the Cheap.

By Chrisjob

In my wife's (then, girl-I-was-gonna-marry-but-hadn't-yet) first post-college apartment, we filled the entire area over the sofa with album covers. We used sticky-tack, but the jackets were heavy, they fell often, and it ruined the surface of many of them.

This technique is much more brilliant. It's as simply as l-shaped screws. Of course. No harm to the jackets, and it allows the artwork to be interchanged as the modd strikes you. Excelle » READ MORE

Guitar hero's rejoice

By michaelfouly

The guys at slicksticks.com have done it again.

This is by far a one of a kind wall graphic. If you're into music at all or love guitars, this is definitely a must have. Apparently there is a whole series of popular guitar decal styles coming out. Fender Strat, a cool Ibanez Bass, and a flying V guitar. Totally rad.

This should be huge hit with the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video game crowd. Now this is a wall decal!! Just thought I'd share a » READ MORE

Free Stuff: Unity Mashup

By Ken Hoyt

djearworm.jpg

DJ Earworm is a mashup artist; he's rather like a musical poet/conductor melding other artists into a unique new piece. I love his work.

His latest: Together as One is a combination of One by U2, Come Together by the Beatles, Someday We’ll be Together by Diana Ross and We Belong Together by Mariah Carey. His deft handling of the collection turns it into an anthem for concord. Not a bad message in our frazzled, fearful world.

Free stuff: An earful of style

By Ken Hoyt

djearworm.jpg

Lately, it seems, very chic people have taken to hiring other stylish people to keep themselves au courant. Or, at the least, keeping them wardrobed, primped and styled perfectly.

In my long career I've styled both people and homes, and generally I loved both. I will admit, however, that houses almost never suffer from insuperable pretensions.

I've written about DJ Earworm before. He's a genius at MashUp and has the golden ear for making sexy sou » READ MORE

A Merry Talk Box Christmas.

By Chrisjob

Check out this marvelous video, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" via the Talkbox. A talkbox is a device that takes the music generated by an instrument, and feeds it through a tube into one's mouth, wherein one "mouths" or whispers the lyrics, allowing the shape of the mouth to affect the timbre of the instrument. The most famous example of this effect is Peter Frampton's "making the guitar talk." (This was also responsible for the vocal » READ MORE

Free Holiday Music Downloads.

By Chrisjob

The internet is a mighty fine thing when compared to the terrible holiday mix of your local soft-rock radio station. RetroThing points us to several alternative options for fun, rockin', and kitschy holiday tunes: "FaLaLaLaLa.com is releasing new music every day to count down to the holiday - I like the recording of the Sammes Singers taking a break from their usual stint as background singers for commercials.  Hi-Fi Holiday has put up several f » READ MORE

House Tunes: DIY Your Own Party Soundtrack

By Ken Hoyt Ever notice that the best parties and clubs have the greatest music? Whenever I put together a party I like to create a soundtrack. On bigger events I’ll hire a DJ to build an entire evening… starting with hot and flirty music for cocktail hour… moving on to environment sweetening* tracks for dinner. I like to finish the evening with music that is quiet and sleepy (cue the parking valets).

Sounding like you’re cutting edge is important for » READ MORE

Musical Furniture

By DIY Maven

This is a very cool idea indeed: furniture on which you can play music. The artist behind Musical Furnishings is the rather dishy Tor Clausen. Tor makes tables, chests and outdoor furnishings that you can take a pair of mallets to and bang out some tropical tunes marimba style. Individual pieces are priced from anywhere between 300 to 3500 bucks, and each includes a pair of mallets and a song book.

Before The Cleanup

By RustIndy

This is just a sample of the horrendous mess I live in every day. The desk is way too large and is in a poor working place, the workout equipment is crowded by clutter, and the music stuff is scattered from one end to the other.

So why am I not cleaning it up? Because it's time to completely rearrange the place! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Too much stuff, too little space.

I need help finding an arrangement that lets these two adjoined rooms c » READ MORE

DIY Vinyl LP Coasters

By Chrisjob

These are by no means an original idea. I saw them on all sorts of websites when shopping for unique Christmas gifts. However, $20-45 for six or eight coasters seems like a bit much. For the same investment [for the hole saw], you can make these guys by the thousands, and by picking out your own LPs, you can select from the choicest of colors and label designs.

And while you're feeling LP-tastic, check this out!

Supplies:

Building DIY speakers, Part 2: What you need

By jonhdahl

In  part one of this series, I introduced the concept of building DIY speakers. The lowdown is this: it isn't really that hard, and for (say) $300-$800, you can have a pair of speakers that will outperform anything at Best Buy or Circuit City, and will be better than about 75% of the stuff sold in high-end audio stores. And you'll end up paying maybe 20% of what you'd pay if you bought excellent speakers at retail.

So where to begin? Well, there » READ MORE
