Uninviting Mid Century Modern Living Room Makeover

By DIY Maven

HGTV's Find Your Style found some needed warmth for this living room. Earthy colors and plushy upholstery seemed to do the trick. A new facade for the fireplace certainly didn't  hurt either. » READ MORE

Ugly laminate countertops can make us do crazy things, like trying to paint them. I've never really tried it but the thought has crossed my mind. Take a look at this resurfacing system that was developed in Canada and is being sold by ecocountertopsUSA, Canada and Australia. » READ MORE

Vanity Chair....Before

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-08-28

Isn't this vanity chair sad? Somehow the naked outlet on the wall behind it makes it even more tragic. Miss Priss took pity on the thing and now it looks fab-yoo-lous! Click here to see for yourself!

The World's Best Upholstery Fabric Deal

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-08-24

Call me underpriveleged but I had my first IKEA experience yesterday here in San Diego. I scampered  through the maze like a crazed rat looking for food, only I was searching out the fabric section.  What I finally found out first hand is that  » READ MORE

My Hallway Turned Gallery!

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-07-16

Like most homes, mine has a center hall. It's been neglected for a very long time as we've only used it to go from one room to another. THAT has all changed. When you think about it, there's a TON of real estate in a hallway; real estate that's perfect for highlighting art--preferably YOUR art. I decided that's what I wanted to do » READ MORE

Wednesday Night Upholstery: Before and After

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-07-16

Classes are filling and expanding. I wish everyone could come to my home studio (basement) and learn fast and easy techniques to transform your Goodwill trashy furniture into upcycled beauties.  The new class started last night and each one brought a simple piece and a difficult piece. We got started on the easy ones first to get the feel of the tools, staple gun, and to fully understand why upholsterers charge the prices they do. Here's a perfect example of Beginner's Instant Gratification. » READ MORE

Lampshade Makeover...With Paint

By DIY Maven

created at: 2009-07-15

So I had this lampshade that had faded badly. It went from black to a sort of aubergine. I liked the shape and if I had bought a replacement, it would have looked just like it, except for the aubergine part. Because the shade itself is plastic with a fabric overlay, I thought it might paint up nicely. It did! I put one coat of Canyon Black in satin on all four sides, avoiding the bias trim edges at the top and bottom, which hadn't faded. » READ MORE

Same Furniture, Four Different Looks

By DIY Maven

euro_livingroom1

Mochi Home does a Euro bachelor pad 4 ways with just paint and a few accessories. The best thing about the computer-generated makeovers is that the original furniture remains the same. Very cost effective! It's also a great argument for choosing 'neutral' when buying expensive upholstered pieces. The top image shows what the room really looks like; below are its virtual makeovers.

How To: Rainbow Garden Furniture.

By Chrisjob

Check out any 'design on a budget' book. When pursuing the question "what's the biggest 'bang for your buck' in home decor?" the authors will almost always answer, "a $20.00 can of paint." And is turns out, they're right.

Case in point: Maddylane's rainbow-coated garden furniture redo, with a lovely chocolate trim. Just look at the photo below for the contrast in color and texture. The worn, water-soaked wood from before looks dingy and dangerou » READ MORE

Bungalow Makeover: From Foreclosure to Fabulous

By DIY Maven

Ten industrial sized Dumpsters were filled with the junk that filled Lisa and Todd's 1905 Portland bungalow. It had been inhabited by human and non-human squatters before the couple purchased the forlorn property. The before pictures pretty much sum up the condition of the home, but Lisa & Todd saw past it. They restored it to its former glory, including new hardwood floors, vintage light fixtures and subway tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. T » READ MORE

DIY: Replacing Foam in a Lounge Chair Cushion

By ModHomeEcTeacher

  created at: 2009-05-08

There's no question that down cushions are high-end and luxurious. The down side (ha! no pun intended) is that they lack resilience and don't provide the springiness many folks want in their seat. The problem with foam cushions is that they get compacted and crumbly after years of use.  Many people ask me how to change out their down cushions to foam, or just replace their flattened out foam cushions. To see a very DIY friendly » READ MORE

The Laziest Slipcover Tutorial Ever

By ModHomeEcTeacher

created at: 2009-03-27

Look in any decorating magazine and there will be a room with baggy, white or natural slipcovers. It's the perfect canvas for all sorts of eclectic decor. I don't do slipcovers. I never learned how because I've always had neutral upholstery fabrics on my furniture. However, seasonal slipcover changes seem like the ultimate luxury. Light and fresh in the Spring and nubby, warm and cozy in the Fall, ah yes. » READ MORE
