Paint a Floor Canvas.
By Chrisjob
Oh my goodness, rugs are such a pain to purchase. They're either 1) crazy tacky, or 2) crazy expensive.
So, make your own. Begin with a preprimed canvas, and get creative. The result is a surprisingly durable floor covering that can be as graphic or demure as you design it.
Yes! You Can Paint a Ceramic Tile Floor
By ModHomeEcTeacher
When we bought our house many years ago, one big problem was the big front entry and hallway. They were tiled in a mauve-y purple thick ceramic tile. Mr. Mod had just put down hardwood floors in the large great room and we had them stained and finished by a professional (at that time we lacked DIY know how), and we were tapped out. » READ MORE
Recycle Carpet Samples
By ModHomeEcTeacher
It's time for me to take a break from Christmas decor. When I think about the fresh, new year, I get giddy about cleaning, clearing, and being creative with inexpensive materials. Lucky for me, Readymade has provided three ideas from Jen Trolio for reusing carpet samples. Lowe's, Home Depot and some supersize stores always seem to have an abundance of carpet samples available right after New Year's Day. With a utility knife, a straight edge and duct tape, boring carpet samples can be transformed into a dandy floor runner, a tactile headboard and a wacky flower vase. To get a jump on things I'm making lists... » READ MORE

LED Floor Captures Digital Footprints.
By ChrisjobFloor designers Sensacell installed a 250 sq. foot interactive LED floor from 1000 of their LED panels at the 2008 World Expo in Spain. Over time, the floors begin to remember patterns and trails of steps, which will either highlight how often we go to the refridgerator, or remind us of our ecological footprint. One or the other.

How To: Hide Wires in Between Your Carpet and Wall.
By ChrisjobThis trick is a classic: Instructable-maker Condongolev highlights the basic, but clever, technique of sliding cables, cords, and wires in that tiny groove between the carpet and the wall. Just extend the wire, and use a pointed, but blunt object (like a broken pencil) to push it into the little space. Works great for speaker wire, coax cable, power supplies, etc.

Linoleum Remnant Kitchen Floor.
By Chrisjob
From the Diary of a Vermont Eco Builder:
"In keeping with our eco design model, and just for the sheer fun of it, we’ve decided that the kitchen floor will be made up from all the leftover pieces of Marmoleum we’ve saved so far."
They took stock of their collection, designed a pleasing layout on the computer, and after a proper subfloor, had the pieces installed. Fantastic.
Dream House, part I
By dropcaseI'm sure everyone here has done this at some point, but what's your dream house like?
My wife and I were talking about it last night, and started writing down our ideas. We're still not completely sure how we want to organize everything, but it's nice to see a start. We've already gotten several rooms started, including the kitchen, bathrooms, a breakfast nook, finished basement, and garage area.
If anyone has suggestions on putting it together or » READ MORE
How to Make Floor Clamps
By stickmopFloor clamps are sometimes used with floating floors to hold the planks together while the glue dries. Most newer floating floors click together and don't use glue, but I got a deal on some solid bamboo that can be floated but requires glue in the tongue and groove.
Commercial floor clamps cost about $20 each. I made four clamps using rachet clamps from Home Depot, some rivets with washers and some nailing plates I found at the local recycled bui » READ MORE

Great new floors!
By heidijane Bamboo flooring is the greatest thing since sliced white bread. It doesn't warp in water so that you can finally wash a wood floor with soap and water and put it in your bathroom or kitchen and have no fear of the warrenty becoming void!
Warm Toes!
By SenselessI've had an aversion to cold ever since I got lost in the Mountains of Pennsylvania in a snowstorm for 23 hours.
That probobly explains why I live in Florida.
The floor in the Master Bath has electric heating elements embedded below the tiles and it wasn't that hard to do. I got a system that uses a long loop of wire but they also make some in matts which I suppose might be easier to layout if your room is fairly square.
The master bath has a su » READ MORE

I feel that carpet is an environemntal issues (production and waste), that it never is truly clean once you live on it (allergies, etc). What has been the experience with bamboo or cork? Are they durable, at least as durable as wood? Are they of general appeal to prospective buyers? Do I have to be careful which » READ MORE
