By DIY Maven

Check out these wax luminaries made out of water balloons. Yup, water balloons! Besides the balloons, you'll need some high melt paraffin wax, a double boiler and a cookie sheet. Other than that, the proceedure, which seems simple enough, goes something like this:

  1. Fill balloon with tepid water.
  2. Melt your wax in the double boiler to 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Slowly dip your balloon into the wax, hold it for a few seconds.
  4. Withdraw the balloo » READ MORE

Green Candles

By lilybee

created on: 12/03/08

Holidays equals candles for lots of folks, but it turns out that your average candle is not as green as it could be.

Most candles are made from paraffin wax, paraffin is a by-product of crude oil. Crude oil...well you know the story. Even worse, the soot from paraffin wax is apparently no good for your lungs and can cause respiratory damage. There is also lead in the wicks of some candles! Apparently the best way to tell is to part the th » READ MORE

Snowflake Lights.

By Chrisjob

Nothing sets a festive mood like a fresh lighting scheme. From tiki torches at a summer BBQ to a full-on romantic candlelit dinner on Valentine's day, there's always something incredible about the unique glow at special occasions.

But such an investment for once-a-year is a bit wasteful...well, at least it used to be. Requiring only a scissors and some completely reusable L.E.D. votives, Design*Sponge offers this project: snowflake lights. Bea » READ MORE

How to embellish a plain candle--in about a minute.

By DIY Maven

Craft Ark has a quick technique to embellish plain pillar candles. Supplies are minimal and include metal daisy embellishments and split pins.

Simply bend the petals of the daisies; hold daisies to candle and then push a split pin (brad) through their center holes and into the candle.

Although the effect is great, I’d consider using glass or metal beads for even more variety, embellishment-wise. OR you could just use decorative brads or brad buddy » READ MORE

DIY Wooden Candle Holders

If you have some leftover scraps from your latest woodworking project, how about using them to make votive candle holders? They’re easy to produce and beautiful when completed, which means you might want to make a few for yourself and some to give as gifts.

Supplies

1. A chunk of wood the size of your choice. Although, a standard votive cup is about ½ inch high, which means you’ll want to use a piece of wood double that thickness, or so. (My h » READ MORE

Eight Crazy Nights

By DIY Maven

In deference to the Jewish members of my family, I thought I’d lay off Christmas for a second and turn my attention to Hanukkah.

So, no trees, garland or even twinkle lights. "No twinkle lights?" you ask. Yes, but don’t worry. Households who observe Hanukkah find holiday sparkle in the lights of the Menorah.

Judaica Mall has an extensive selection of Menorahs so beautiful Christmas celebrants will be tempted to add them to their mantles. Here » READ MORE

Once a Twig, Always a Twig

By erinloechner

You're probably all getting tired of the woodsy/lodge/deer design rampage that's sweeping the cities, but I gotta admit: I've got a soft spot for these candles.

Twig Taper Candles from Bell'Occhio

$24 for the pair, at Bell'Occhio.

Would look great burning close (but not TOO close) to your Christmas tree with some vintage silver candle holders.

And hey, if nothing else, your kids can provide a smashing rendition of the Three Little Pigs.
