Decorating a cement wall HELP

By svolleyball14

There is this ugly cement section of my wall that protrudes out. How can I decorate it? (without painting over it-against my lease).

created on: 03/10/08What about hanging fabric in front of the concrete section and not adhering anything to the wall?  Or are the ceilings concrete too?  Ikea's Kvartal System for hanging fabric panels gives you the option of purchasing hardware to mount rails on the walls or the ceiling.  Multiple rails can be joined together to span the width of the area you need to cover.  Ikea has a good selection of curtain panels for use with this system.  They are 118" in length, so they are more than long enough to work with a ceiling height of up to 9'.  It would be a relatively inexpensive option too, which is always good.

I was thinking about the fabric thing and wondering if, instead of hot glue, which would be a bit unsightly (stuck here, loose here), you could try the starch method to attach the fabric to the wall.  Don't know if concrete is too porous for that, but if it is, I'd attach fabric to foam board or cardboard and then attach THAT to the wall w/hot glue.  The starch method is just fabric soaked in full strength regular starch and then applied sort of like wallpaper.  Sounds unlikely, but it works.  Others are surely better versed in the technique, but I am fond of it.  Also, what about plain old contac paper of some sort?

Just thoughts.

Could you "wrap" it in some way with fabric or some decorative paper and use the hot glue method mentioned above?  Then it at least adds some color.  Another idea I had was to cover it in cork tiles (again, adhering with hot glue) or some other material so that you have the visual texture as well as a place to hang things whether it's notes or pieces in a more formal way with pish pins or T-pins.

Just a thought (based on having much cement and many small boys) but what about using chalk to do something of some sort that would be less offensive?  I know my boys can whip up a veritable Sistine Chapel of Trains on any concrete they find.  Won't be permanent, altho I wonder (here again, I'm not your best resource--addled at best) if cheap hairspray would render it more permanent, then to be removed with hmmm....rubbing alcohol maybe?  can't really hurt concrete, I don't think.  And actually, I think that poster paint paint or some such might be as easily removeable with some kind of remover-stuff.  Seems to me the hairspray thing was popular as a sealant when I was working an after school program...kind of hazy now...all three boys required full strip of beds w/mattress cleaning this a.m.  *sigh*  i tell you that only so you understand that this is not the top of my game by any means.

Finally, I used to use hot glue to attach laminated posters to my cinderblock walls when I was a teacher.  You might try that.  It won't be permanent and will be more or less easy to remove.

Good luck.

Yes a photo would be nice but as someone who has the same problem, it's getting anything to stick to the cement, or brick in my case.  You can't put nails or cement nails in it because that would break the lease but the new command sticky things don't stick, therein lies the problem.  Any more suggestions?
