look at what others have done for inspiration:Tiny Houses: or How to Get Away From It All by Lester R. Walker is phenominal. There are also companies on the net that build them, so they have designs posted. Also look at Boat GALLEY & RV designs. These are the most space effient designs out there usually using modern tech.
rules of thumb:
minimalism - simplify, simplify (thanks thoreau)
double duty - everything should multi-task
square is a more space saving shape than round.
color code the storage containers, so you don't have to open 5 to find something.
store things when not in use - collapsible, foldable, squishable constructs - a lot of camping gear folds away for storage. (like an empty 5 gallon water jug)
hanging is a very good idea, store things hanging from the ceiling when not in use and bring it down with a hooked stick.
wall or shelf mount everything you can to save counter space - radio - can opener, bottle opener, trash. etc . . .
Look for ideas in the 'back to nature' books and magazines from the 70s - the whole post scott nearing trend is filled with ideas for minimalist living in cabins,

Hmmm- think vertical, hanging as much as possible. Check out stuff designed for RV kitchens, I bet there will be a lot of good ideas there. They also have colandars in Sur Le Table that collapse, those are pretty cool.
