?Recycle Old WIndow Weights-Uses?

By sparkie

Hi There,

I am proud to announce that I have finished installing my first replacement windows (10 now, more later this yr) in my foreclosed "Carnie Crackhouse".  (I accidentily got italics..oops) I had to replace the original 1934 single paned leaking, high maintenance windows.  Purists and maybe most designers would be mad/unhappy but I was willing to trade real wood for low/no maintenance in this case, in my part of the world.

Anyway, have (40) window weights and looking for alternate uses.  Otherwise I'll just salvage at scrap yard.  Only can think of using them as light small fishing boat anchors.  Anyone want 'em?  But shipping would be a b**ch.  (Maybe I said bunch).  Ha!

Here's pics of before, during and after as well as weights on my old, existing linoleum art deco floor in kitchen.  There is solid oak underneath that I will be restoring later.

Before:  (2 panes were actually missing...zero paned windows?)

I have one that is made into a dachsund style dog.  I bought it at an art show many years ago.  I hope you can find some creative sculptor to re-cycle them into art!

Just tested it and it is not lead, it's ferrous.  I am not alarmed by lead just want to know when I am handling haz mat stuff.  I got alot of lead paint that I will be removing soon.  I think basic rule of haz mat friable stuff is keep it wet so the little mean particles don't float around.

Freecycle...good idea, I have little experience w/ that so should spend some time there to check out.

Check out freecycle.org, they might have a group in your area. A local artist may  be able to reuse them in some project or another. Don't freak out about a bit of lead, sheesh. Just don't eat it, or give it to kids to play with. :)

Opps...Lead!???  That never crossed my mind and put a magnet on them to test.  They look like concretey metal.  I'll look at them closer tomorrow.  I am aware of lead hazards and have taken some into salvage yard before.  Actually, I have an old coffee can of lead POWDER which I found in my grandma's garage.  Anyone want that?  Just kidding.  It was used by electricians and plumbers years & years ago, called "pouring lead".

I'll probably take them for scrap.   Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for those pictures! I've heard of these things, but I have never actually seen them inside the window... very neat! (although I don't blame you for replacing). As far as re-using the weights... They sound like the perfect thing to take up that empty spot in the basement! And if they are made out of lead, you don't even want to use them for that. I'm excited you looked for a way to re-use, but I think you're going to have to go with "recycle" and see what the scrap yard is going to do with them.

Love your window molding. We had those nice stools (sills) in our old house. Hubby stripped them with a heat gun. I hear ya about the vinyl versus wood. Using 6 over 1 you kept a very appropriate look for the age of the house. As for the weights, they could be made out of lead, so you might want to be careful in how you recycle them.
