Katrina Homes in New Orleans...Gratitude

By sparkie

I didn't know what section to post this in.  Inspiration for if you feel your home needs alot of work, it could be worse.  And an opportunity to take a moment to feel grateful for what we have.

I was a Red Cross volunteer in Katrina & Rita disaster areas for 4 days>>>>>>>>>>>>>they were too slowww, so I "acquired" my own car to travel from San Antonio to Beaumont, TX to Lake Charles, LA to Cameron Parish, LA to finally New Orleans.  I did various tasks at most locations.  Really easy to find something worthwhile to do if in area and a self-starter.

Main things I needed to function in a disaster area were:  vehicle, gas (stop at your local utility staging area for a fillup-it helped I was an electrician), MRE's & water (usually available by Salvation Army/military), learn the area's current curfew rules, park to camp/sleep in safe area w/ others and listen to local radio station for news/developments.

I did re-build a port-o-john at a grassroots animal rescue group camping out in an Orleans Parish Winn-Dixie parking lot.  That would make a "How-To" post.:)

Note:  Not critizing Red Cross.  They don't want to send in volunteers before it is safe to prevent additional rescuing.  And, at this time, the national level supervisors for me were evacutees themselves due to Rita, so much chaos & confusion.

Links are clearer image, others have been saved several times.

I had to drive around this obstacle.

Sorry the pics are poor quality.  I saved them several times before this uplaod and originally I only took disposable cameras to disaster area in case of damage.

I have a strong urge to return to New Orleans to volunteer again.  Maybe this summer or fall after I straighten out my own "disaster" house.

I live in NO and there is still so much work to be done in the city. Because of the slow responses of so many different people (on so many different levels), we really rely on folks who volunteer their time and energy to help. We should all be grateful for what we have.
