Wood Tones

By sillygirl

Ok, I want to know how you feel about mixing light and dark wood tones. I love the look of dark wood, but I have a small apartment and I don't want to overwhelm the small space with dark wood. What are your opinions?

I don't like too much symmetry in design - it can be boring.  I personally like mixing types of woods...as long as you keep it to 2 or 3.  My kitchen table is teak, and the ladder back chairs are espresso...but the contrast looks great!  A friend of mine restored an old table in natural wood, and then added 4 different chairs (which she found curbside during heavy trash month) and refinished them, adding some cream paint to each in different places to tie it all together.  It looks fabulous!

to yeye: your desk looks great!

Optimist: I see what you mean, I think. I don't have any 'sets' of furniture either... my style tends somewhere between modern (I've been attracted to a lot of mid-century pieces lately) and eclectic/whimsy. My biggest concern is making it look cohesive, not like a hodge podge of whatever I could afford (although thats what it reeeeally is)

It does really depend on your style. I recently stain the top of my desk a dark shade while the rest is light. I didn't really know what was going to happen, but the result is pretty fun.

I think it depends on the style of the furniture. If you are talking about classic highly polished dark furniture, I would not introduce say light scandanavian style furniture. If you have a more relaxed or eclectic style then I think it is ok with some reservations.  I have several pieces of the rather hand-made looking furniture that is chunky and not highly polished. Colours vary from mid to dark and I think they look fine together. There is also an old dark bench (from a church originally I think) which is more polished looking, but it is not 'dainty' and fits in well.  I do not like 'sets' of furniture and all my pieces are different, if you prefer a more formal style then you might be better to stick with the dark wood and brighten the room with light paint, carpet, soft furnishings etc.
