Desk

By sillygirl

So I'm mostly moved into my first apartment.... the problem is that I have no desk and I'm a student, so the desk is kind of necessary. I've been craigslisting like crazy but I cant find what I want, plus I have to get anything I buy up three flights of stairs, so between the desk and movers to get it up to my apartment, it might just be better to buy something from a store that will deliver.

Anyway, my question is where would you go to look for a desk besides the big office and department stores? Any suggestions? I want a wooden desk (I'm not a fan of glass etc), kind of plain and sleek, and one that doesn't have a huge hutch or something. I like the West Elm Jay Desk if that gives you any idea.

Oh, I also like this from 2modern except I can't afford it, and for both desks, I'd like to have some drawers for storage and stuff.

I agree with the IKEA suggestion. In addition try hitting the local thrift shops once or twice weekly for a choice pick of the new stuff. Obviously they don't deliver but you can find some amazing stuff for dirt cheap. Also its summer time so its garage sale season. Pick up the paper on Thursday or Friday, circle the "moving sales" which are the most likely to have furniture, then hit a few on Saturday morning. Great place for bargins. Keep looking on Craigs list, if possible a few times a day so you don't miss your dream desk because someone else bought it. OHHHH and get baking a few dozen cookies, deliver them to your neighbors and introduce yourself to all your new "desk moving" friends. Honestly its great to know who you live around and you will be amazed at how helpful people can be.

I was at Ikea last week and was taken with the Gustav desk, for $169.  It's very similar to the Jay Desk. And it's real wood, not particleboard. Since it comes disassembled, it would be easy to get upstrairs.  (The 2modern desk is lovely, by the way.)
