Beware of the boiler room. The sewer stack project.

By sevenofive

This is an early-ish before picture of the state of the boiler room.  I think we were on about our 2nd of 5, 30 yard dumpsters in the process of cleaning out the house.

After removing several layers of trash.

...and several more layers of trash.  The boiler room became navigable.  Having turned the main water line on and off a few times and replaced several valves in the house, I new there were issues back there.  What was that sound of flowing water back there?  After removing a one foot think layer of tree roots in the back corner of the boiler room...

Ahh, delightful.  The main sewer stack is completely rusted through and dumping raw sewage into a hole in the floor.

With the help of a brave, energetic neighbor, an angle grinder, a sledge hammer, shovel, and few other digging tools, we removed the bad line and dug through the hard clay.  (This took hours and I decided to spread the hard digging out over a few days.)  We made it to a point where we could fasten a rubber boot to the cast iron line and tap into new PVC from there.

Some more PVC, connectors and a little concrete and it was a done deal.  Whew!  Now all we need is gas, some toilets, and hot water.
