Broken Angel...
By roadvermin
Months ago my partner told me about a bizarre structure she saw a few years back in Brooklyn called Broken Angel, I was intrigued and so I tried to find some reference to it on the internet at the time but failed. Last night as we chilled out with a few beers our conversation somehow turned to this subject and within a few minutes she had found several websites relating to this brave and interesting building.
The link included with this post takes you to a Flickr page that has an interesting write up Christopher Wood, son of owners. It chronicles the buildings history and the problems they are currently having in relation to building codes, finances and a recent fire. It also states that owners hope to use the building as a community resource at some time in the future if their problems can be resolved.
I spotted another project similar project a while ago on the net called Chaos House, turns out its near Lyon but Ive never seen it.
I think both of these structure weather you like them or not should be awarded some merit simply because they break the mold in terms of what is generally acceptable as a building. I think they are both extreme examples of one off scrap architecture but they are quite clever and beautiful in their own way. I think people and governments should exercise a bit more creativity when erecting things that will outlive the current styles and trends although I do understand that it would be insane if we relaxed all planning rules and let people put up whatever they wanted.
But I feel we can learn something from these renegade architects and creators certainly we should take note of their reuse of materials as a positive step and maybe it teaches us to be a little more open minded which is never a bad thing in my eyes.
