papier mache tree

By ritas

I need to make a large (8-10ft) papier mache tree to use as a prop for a retreat. Anyone know how to do this.  Not so much how to paper mache, but how and what to use as a mold? Thanks for any suggestions. Ritas

My mother used to make large paper mache objects using those giant inflatable ballons or cheap giant play balls as a base.

Yesterday she also told me her secret; she didn't use traditional paper mache, but elmers glue instead.  It dried faster, was strong and thus required fewer layers, and wasn't prone to the mold/mildew like paper mache obects are.

As part of her senior art show, my sister made paper mache trees using chicken wire as a mold.  Good luck!
