What is Deconstruction?

By renew

Most do it yourselfers have deconstructed something, whether tjhey used the term or not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deconstruction_(building) .  Since a wrecking ball is rarely the tool for remodeling, who hasn't laboriously removed sheetrock/plaster and 2x4s to expand a room?  What about saving a built-in corner cabinet or window for a later project?  All over the country businesses have sprung up to fill the need for larger-scale building salvage reuse and deconstruction.  Many people may have heard of the great finds at architectural salvage stores.  The trade group Building Materials Reuse Association www.buildingreuse.org has a list of hundreds of deconstruction and reuse stores; many are non-profit with strong social missions and great prices.  In Brattleboro, Vermont, ReNew Building Materials & Salvage www.renewsalvage.org deconstructs several houses a month, with a wealth of flooring, cabinets, doors, plumbing fixtures, plywood, and framing lumber saved at every job.  Many times the "trash" from a small home can fit into one 30 yard roll-off after the salvage is complete, leaving just a foundation and chimney behind.  I encourage homeowners to explore the possibilties of reuse and deconstruction on their own projects!
