Interesting challenge. Hmmmm.... What color are your walls? Think about painting them a light color to make the room feel warmer. Use accent colors to try to complement the outdoors, such as soft butter yellow, light blue, green etc. I would use an ivory or warm white as a base color to keep the space light and bright. Think warm tones, not cool. This can also be reflected in your chosen art pieces and accessories. Furnish the space with an ample amount of lamp fixtures, ie floorlamps (papershades would be nice and airy), and table lamps in any overly dark corners. Light fixtures are important if natural light is limited, and use full-spectrum lighting which is as close to natural light as possible. Candles are also nice. I would incorporate glassware as accent pieces to try and pick up and reflect light throughout your space. Mirrors also work wonders in reflecting light. Try some on your south or west wall. Hardwood or carpet? Think about light rugs to throw down to lighten up the space if flooring is dark. Is the patio door solid, or is there a window? Think about minimal window coverings, or sheer curtains or blinds to allow light to flood the space. Also, I would incorporate plants into your room for an additonal outdoorsy feel. Some plants bloom gorgeous colors, such as the Christmas cactus and African violet etc. Both tolerate low light. That will add some nice color. Keep your space as soft and light and airy feeling as possible.
Or.. embrace the darkness of the home and turn it into a romantic and mysterious environment. Think rich colors (red, orange, gold, fuchsia) and textures in fabrics and ornate accessories to create an inviting sanctuary. Mmmm... could be interesting. (:
