DIY Maven-great list and love your picture. If all else fails and you just don't want to be crafty, you can send them to Greendisk, who recycles them. They have a pack it service for for less than 20 pounds using your own box, which is relatively inexpensive.
Get your friends and neighbors together and have a CD party. (Any excuse to have a party is always a good idea!) Collect them then mail them off. Greendisk collects other techno trash too (ie floppy disk, plastic case, cell phones, etc.) Go to their website and check them out. http://www.greendisk.com/gdsite/Default.aspx

Good ideas! I actually made CD dividers for my CD rack out of some old CDs.
