Ferns work great, I know! Hostas do o.k., but whatever it is, it has to love clay-filled, acidic soil, with lots of rocks, and little to no actual topsoil. What fun!

ok, I am going to be away until thursday but will post some suggestions for other plants that will work near/under the trees when I get back.

White birch, white pine, some sort of oak, and some sort of other tree with maple-ish looking leaves. The white pine predominates in the back, followed closely by the oak-type tree. It sends down acorns, anyways, so I suppose it is an oak. The birch is mostly in the front of the place where it is pretty. This moss is growing on the ground & the rocks, not the trees, but prolly you knew that. I'll try & post pictures today, or upload & link to my Flikr set, or something. :-)

LOL, keeping kids off of it is the hardest part!

O.k. :-) Although I did no work on it whatsoever, it was like that when I moved here. All I do is keep the kids from climbing on it. :-) It's pretty though.

Oooh, Caya, I'd love to see that, will you post about it here on Curbly?

Do any of your ideas involve gardening under 50-foot trees? 'Cause my most successful project so far has been my beautiful and varied moss garden on a little hillside by my kitchen.
