Wash a synthetic pillow

By optimist

NOT FOR FEATHER OR DOWN PILLOWS

If you have synthetic pillows (just in case there is any Euro/US terminology confusion, I'm talking about the rectangular, cotton covered, synthetic filled things you put your head on in bed!) that need to be freshened up, you will probably find that a label says, hand wash only. The reason for this is usually because in a machine the inner will roll itself up into a knot. Hand-washing a pillow is not very successful though, and who wants to snuggle their face into a dry-cleaned, chemical treated pillow?

One solution is to 'quilt' the pillow so the inner does not move. Find a large needle and thread with a good length of strong or doubled thread. Shake the pillow into shape then push the needle through, leaving a long tail, bring the needle back about an inch or so away and tie a knot - several knots! pulling the thread a bit tight but don't flatten the pillow. Repeat this another three times, arranged like the 4 dots on a dice, and spaced so that the inner pillow cannot move. Wash your pillow in the machine, if you are going to put it in a dryer leave the threads in and remove them when the pillow is dry. If you are drying outside take out the threads first, and leave it somewhere airy to dry.
