Wash a synthetic pillow

If you have synthetic pillows (just in case there is any Euro/US terminology confusion, I'm talking about the rectangular, cotton covered, synthetic filled things you put your head on in bed!) that need to be freshened up, you will probably find that a label says, hand wash only. The reason for this is usually because in a machine the inner will roll itself up into a knot. Hand-washing a pillow is not very successful though, and who wants to snuggle their face into a dry-cleaned, chemical treated pillow?
