Ahh...good question! In a nut shell contemporary art & design is what is happening right now and is wide open to different styles, aesthetics, etc. Contemporary is more of a time related definition.

Modern art & design refers to mid/late 19th century to somewhere around the 1960-70s. It is generally thought of (in design terms) as clean lines, geometric shapes...which are very popular in contemporary design hence the confusion!

This is a big broad hazy area which everyone has differing opinions so I am sure there are others who could add to this very general definition.
