Idea for a Modern Home Number - Basalt Post Lit with Solar Flood

By mrl45lav

When we remodeled our home in a modern style, it was the little things that drove us crazy.  Like how to find a street-side house number that fit the style of our home.  For what it would have cost us to buy 2 Nuetra numbers at DWR we were able to come up with the following.

 1. 3 foot Basalt Post - Try local patio and stone supply companies - $65 - White Granite was our other option.
 2. Avant Garde Numbers from Home Depot Expo Ctr. - $10 each.
 3. Masonry Drill Bit - $5
 4. Black Epoxy - $3
 5. Solar Flood Light - $25

Total Cost: About $115 - or $35 less than two of the DWR numbers.

Drill the post before putting it in place - it takes a bit of pressure to make a dent in the hard stone - so having it laying on the ground allowed me to use my weight to help the drill.  I used water to keep the bit and hole cool - careful the bit gets hot!

You will probably need 2 people getting the post into place as it weighs about 200 lbs.  If you are worried about it shifting you can put some sack concrete in the hole to secure it.

To light - we used a solar flood from Home Depot to illuminate the numbers at night - eliminating the need for extending our exterior lighting to the street.

Very cool.  I used the same numbers on a solar-lit cedar 4x4 to make a temporary marker.  Eventually I plan to build a low wall out of cinder block and glass brick and will move the numbers onto backlit glass.
