curtain over doorway

By megrockstar

I have a huge open "doorway" into my livingroom when you come up the stairs. My thinking is that in the winter all my heat is going to go in the stairwell( I know it rises but the pull down is down there). So, I see in restaurants in the city, when it is freezing they put a giant curtain around the door. What about a thick giant curtain into my livingroom that also traps the heat? weird? ever done not in a public place?

Notice all my posts are about keeping heat in?

*wink*

I don't think it's wierd at all, I think it's cool & retro. I live in a converted attic space with a tiny stairwell up and no door. I wanted a seperation of some kind so I used ikea deka across the doorway and clip on whatever I'm in the mood to use as a door. I use fabric and silk scarves, so you might need something more sturdy than deka to hold heavy fabric.

Check out this idea.. http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/how-to/how-to-build-felt-sliding-doors-016848

That was very popular in the Great Depression era. It is a very good, economical way of heating just portions of your house.

I've read in various places that people use doorway hangings in their homes, so it definitely isn't unheard of. According to this forum (http://www.exisle.net/mb/index.php?showtopic=22977) this strategy has sound-proofing benefits as well, which may be a bonus. :)
