I would also agree--hire it out if you can and choose carefully.  We bought a house with refinished floors in some rooms.  When I took up the remaining carpet (lr/dr/1bdrm) I realized that the old floors were still more attractive than the ones the prevs. had had done.  Also, they had done some  bleaching (??) thing that now makes it impossible to match hall to room floors unless we start over completely.  Oh, also, whatever they had done has almost no protection at all.  It's a tricky/dusty/sticky job best left to the pros, I think.  Another thought is that you might consider painting your floor.  That's pretty basic and fast and it really is a very lovely look.  Then, if you don't like it, you refinish as you had planned.

From my experience, re-doing wood floors is worth hiring someone who is an EXPERT at it. Your floors are more likely to come out looking fabulous. It's worth the money. Ours had to be sanded, swept, wiped down with tack cloths, dried, and then 3 coats of polyurethane in golden oak finish. It seemed like it took forever, it was the better part of a week. We did 3 rooms and a hallway downstairs. So I would advise getting 2 or 3 estimates, make sure they have a lot of experience, and hire the best guy/gal you can :)
