How to: Easy DIY PANTONE Trash Can

As a designer and blogger, I have a bit of an obsession with color. So naturally, I love PANTONE swatches. One day I looked over at my sad little white trash can and I realized that it would be the perfect blank slate to use for a project. Thus, my PANTONE trash can was born. Read on to check out the final product.   

It’s quirky, colorful and fun… what more could you want from a trash can? And it’s super easy to make!

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

– A plain white trash can
– Spray paint
– Painter’s tape
– A plastic bag (not pictured)
– A black permanent marker

Begin by taping off your trash can. I taped the lid of mine closed on the inside so it wouldn’t flap open while I was spray painting. 

Mine also had some gaps so I taped those off so no spray paint would seep through to the inside.

Next, tape off a line about 2/3 of the way down the bottom part of your trash can. Then tape a plastic bag below that to protect the bottom 1/3 of space.

Now spray paint the whole thing, with the top on. You’ll probably need a couple of coats of paint. Remove the tape once everything is dry.

Last, hand write “PANTONE” and the closest PANTONE number to your paint color underneath using a permanent marker.

And there you have it! A fantastic little trash can that you won’t even want to fill with garbage because it’s so cute.

Your designer and artist friends are sure to squeal with delight when they see it! 

And the great thing about this project is that you can use any paint color, customizing it for your decor. I used Montana Gold spray paint, a line which offers a number of unique colors.
