Ice Hotels... Cool

By lilybee

Have a peek at the pretty that is the ICEHOTEL in Sweden. Different every year, it's built from ice taken from the nearby river and from snice (Snow. Ice. SNICE!) sprayed on huge metal forms. Once the basic shape is in place a BUNCH of different designers, artists and clever folks are shipped in from around the world to make each room unique. And, you know, mind-blowingly beautiful.

Here are a few of the highlights of this winter's Hotel.

Milky Way the exterior light/art installation. The lighting this year has been designed by a team from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, it's pretty incredible throughout the building, there are actually some really interesting and stealable idea's.

Arguably the most important part of any hotel... The Bar

Those are reindeer hides on the seats, they are super-insulating and should stop your nethers from freezing to the spot, of course the whole hotel never gets warmer than 'Holy cow that's cold!' (that's -5°C or 23°F for you scientific types).

Each bedroom  or 'Art Suite' is different, and here are a few of my favorites,

Operation Blade was designed by Londoners Ben Rousseau and Jai Drew, it totally appeases my inner nerd because it looks a bit Sci-Fi (Romulan maybe...)

Suite 306 is called Crystallization, and I love love love the use of light in there.

The blurb says 'Charting the geometric voyage from chaos to order and back to chaos again, previously unperceived beauty is unleashed in a constellation of ice and snow'  I say, 'No Mr. Bond... I expect you to DIE. Mwah ha hahahah'.

Suite 315 'Northern Light' is gorgeous too.

If you're looking to get married or just for a little spiritual guidance the hotel also has an Ice Chapel,

Find stacks more pictures and more about the individual designers here.

If your interest is peaked you can book a room here, Art Suites are around $2000 for 3 nights but you can stay in a less impressive Snow Room for less.
