Clean Silverware Quick!

By lilybee

Holidays are nearly here, which means it's almost time to break out the fancy flatware.

In my family polishing the silverware for big shindigs was always a job delegated to kids and grown-ups not quick enough to come up with an excuse. At the time I hated it but now... kinda comforting.

If you have neither the time nor the inclination (or a few children to use as cheap labour) to get with the polishing, then you could try the quick method... or learn to love the plastic spork.

So, gather up the fancy forks then:

  1. Line a plastic (not metal) basin with aluminum foil, shiny side up. Place the silver inside. Make sure all pieces are contacting the foil or touching a utensil that is.

  2. Sprinkle in 1/4 cup washing soda (find it at grocery stores). Pour in 1 gallon boiling water. Stir and let the silver soak 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. Wearing rubber gloves, remove the silver. Rinse, and buff with a clean, soft cloth. For very tarnished items, repeat the process.

And Voila, done.

Oh yes, I remember sitting there at the kitchen table with silver polish, newspaper laid down on the table and thinking I was special that I got to do this.  Special, all right!
