Choose The Right Humidifier

By lilybee

Stupid winter. It dries your eyeballs into prunes and makes your skin feel like the lady-suit from The Silence of The Lambs (...it rubs the lotion on it's skin). The combo of moisture-sucking cold outside and moisture-sucking heat inside is just rubbish, 'specially for somebody from a damp little island.

Humidifiers are the way forward. Here's how to choose a good one:

  1. Warm or cold mist? It's a personal preference thing. Warm are generally quieter but need cleaning more often to keep them ick free, cold are noisier and well, colder.
  2. What size room are you looking to use it in? Get too much humidifier for your space and you can end up with drippy condensation windows and mold spores and eventually peely paint. Measure your room and check the specs on the side of the box to get the right size.
  3. Refills. How big your reservoir is will determine how long you go between refills, bear in mind that a daily wash of the tank is recommended. The reservoir should be easy to man-handle on and off of the unit, have a big enough hole to get a scrubbie into for cleaning and be able to fit under your tap for easy filling. An indicator light to tell you when you're running low or empty is a must if your tank isn't see-through, an automatic safety switch-off is even better.
  4. Look for a model that has a UV light or a filter to keep germs and bacteria at bay, because surely you get enough of those on your commute to work. or in your office, or the elevator or... well you know.
  5. Also look for a model that has an adjustable moisture control, so you don't have to wake up with hair that looks like it's been poodle permed. Unless you want to.
  6. In a pinch, resting bowls of clean water on your radiators or forced air vents should help, sippy cups (the kind toddlers have) are a good bet if you happen to have an inquisitive kitty chum intent on sabotage.

This quirky little fellow is Fred, he's a humidifier (who's crying out for googly eyes) he's available from bed bath and beyond for $99)
