Cordon Bleu, Bird Style

By lilybee

So you've made your little feathered chums the hippest house on the block, now might be a good time to throw them a dinner party. With that in mind here's a few recipes that boids go nuts for.

Hors d'oeurve:

Pine Cone Nibbles

  • pine cones
  • peanut butter
  • birdseed (your choice)

Spread peanut butter all over the pine cones and roll them in birdseed. Tie a piece of ribbon or string to the top of each cone and hang them on tree branches.

Entrees:

Peanut Butter Suet

  • 2 cups crunchy peanut butter
  • 4 cups quick cook oats
  • 2 cups lard
  • 4 cups corn meal
  • 2 cups white flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar

Melt peanut butter and lard in a large pot over a low heat. Add the remaining ingredients. Pop the mixture into freezer-proof containers, packing firmly to approx. 1 ½ inches thick. Cover and freeze. Raisins or chopped nuts are optional. I'm trying to figure out a way to hang these too... Maybe by poking holes in them before they set super hard.

Dessert:

Suet Cupcakes.

  • 1 lb. suet in small pieces
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup mixed wild bird seed
  • 1 cup chunky peanut butter
  • 1 cup sunflower seed
  • 1 cup rolled oats

Melt the suet over a low heat till it bubbles very gently. Add other ingredients stirring until they're completely blended. Pour the mixture into paper cupcake cups in muffin pans. Chill until hardened. Remove paper and place in your wire basket.

These make pretty big batches, if storing them is going to be an issue, just halve the recipes.

The recipes are adapted a bit from ones I found here.
