Get Rid Of Those Pesky Fruit Flies

By lilybee

Time flies like an arrow. Fruit Flies like bananas. Heh heh.

Apartment Therapy's sister site Re-Nest has a VERY wily way to get rid of the pesky fruit flies that are frankly plaguing my very existence this year.

You'll need a

  • A glass (I'm actually using an old pasta sauce jar)
  • A piece of paper.
  • Some slightly icky fruit or some apple juice to lure the unsuspecting little rotters

created on: 09/11/08

The picture is fairly self explanatory, you just roll the paper up, tape it and jam it up in top there. (I've taped mine down too).

The folks at re-nest have also provided a frankly hi-larious pdf tombstone template.

But actually I reckon if you used fruit enough you could probably make the trap non-fatal. I was once in a Buddhist temple in japan, it was late September and the mosquitoes were enough to incite craziness. The monks told us NOT to swat them, we could shoo them if we must, but it would be better to let them have a meal then go on their way. I am not a very good Buddhist.

I have had infestatipon in my kitchen 2x. I think the worst thing that starts it is like an old grain of rice in the sink. The yeast.

Since I have had this before I head right to fly paper. It is  DISGUSTING but it gets the job done if you havve it bad. Otherwize I have done something similar to this which is using a margarine container and apple cider vinegar and saran wrap on the top with holes. Virtually the same thing but it also works. Old fruit sometimesthe bottom is mush and you dont realize. That is a huge culprit too. believe me, I know....:P

I had the worst fly problem when we moved into our new apartment in July. 30 days and 30 nights of flies, everywhere! I couldn't even eat inside! I would march around the apartment on hours-long rampages swatting flies and cursing their existance (no very buddhist either.) I tried many, many, many traps like yours and caught about 20 a night per jar. A little wine and some dish soap, in a water bottle with a hole in the lid. But the thing that really put a dent in their ecosystem was flypaper. I know its nasty and tacky as hell, but it worked. I put up about 20 strips one night and two days later... well it made a huge difference.

It turned out the guy that lived above us was totally nasty and hadn't done his dishes or taken out his trash in months. And they were coming down the drains. Worst month ever.

In the past, I've made something similar.  I used a used plastic water or soda bottle.  My old office used to have gnats, or some sort of fruit fly.  I used chunks of peaches and nectarines (preferably older and ripe fruits).  Those pesky pests couldn't resist the temptation of those fruits.  The plastic bottle could be squeezed to fill the room with fruit aroma.  My co-worker laughed at my design...but the very next morning he wasn't laughing when +20 gnats/fruitflies were caught in the trap!
