Arne Jacobson at McDonald's?!!!!?
By lilybee
I spotted these on my way through Dublin airport, and was torn
between abject horror and abject 'huh?'. Around here the decor in
McDonald's is heavy on the beige plastic, bolted down chairs and despair.
When I spotted these Arne Jacobson-style chairs, I looked around for an Italian Cafe or posh sandwich shop, but there was no getting round it, they were the McDonald's seating area.

Now, McDonald's = The Bad Guys, and seeing good design (or even knockoffs of good design) in the hands of the enemy was a bit disconcerting, kind of like seeing Paris Hilton wearing a vintage In Utero T-shirt. What does everybody else think? Am I a pompous jerk for feeling proprietorial about good design? Is this a fabby new development? Is this a one off or are the fast food joints where you live chock full of MCM pieces?

Fairy Nuff!
... but wait, you're saying music ISN'T about faded band t-shirts? So that's where I've been going wrong... :)

Yup. Liking good design, then being upset when someone or something you don't like uses good design, does make you a pompous jerk. It also doesn't matter if Britney Spears wears a vintage In Utero shirt, music isn't about faded band t-shirts.

Busted... see that coffee cup on the table... MINE! *hangs head in shame*... I know them to be evil, with their meat by-product based 'food', child targeted marketing and supersizing... but it was a long flight and they were open... yup... I'm a giant hypocrite

I am a fan of McDonalds. I'm not too proud to admit it. It's their damn tasty Iced Coffee. I live in a coffee shop ghetto and McDonalds is actually at the top of the options list when I want a nice cup of coffee.
So, that said, I've been in more than one McD's that's recently remoddelled to accomodate their 'McCafe' corner and have to say that McDonalds is upping the decor quite a bit in a lot of its places. I haven't seen any chairs from DWR yet, but they do appear to have hired a few interior designers to help with the remoddels. Also interesting is that McDonalds has long had a habit of not making every interior the same as the next...which is a bit counter intuitive to their initial founding and concept of 'same food everywhere' concept.

I'm no fan of McDonald's, either. However, I say appreciate good design wherever it shows up. It's becoming so rare here in the US. Just ask Draplin.
