What floor covering would you suggest?

By lesley

I have a really long kitchen/dining area/family room. At the moment the floor is covered with linoleum tiles. They have been serviceable  but too many are coming up now and the floor needs to be replaced. I don't want linoleum again because it gets damaged by water too easily, and linoleum colors are also a bit drab.

What would anyone recommend as a good practical replacement? I have limited funds. Underneath the floor is concrete. The style of the room is comfortable and slightly country with hardwood kitchen units.

This has got me thinking. I just had it fixed in my mind before that it needed to be all one room. This could be much better.

Friends have a Kitch/Dining/Living Room L shaped dealie going on with the dining room at the center.  Living room has carpet with the kitch/dining in hardwood.  Looks FABULOUS.  Wish I'd seen it before, it's the way they'd sculpted it, looks intentional and brill.  Too late for mine.

So ... No, two floorings would look fine if you have appropriate transitional moulding or something with careful planning.  Imho

Dividing up the space would solve my problem. But the room is in fact two rooms with the dividing wall knocked down and it is used very much as one room. I worry that it might look strange if the floor changed in the middle. Has anybody done that and it looks good?

Laminate gets a second vote.  Ikea has cheap flooring options too.

We just put laminate flooring down in our house. It's good for the living room/dining area, but I wouldn't put it down in the kitchen because of water. Could you divide the space and put down sheet vinyl in the kitchen and laminate in the other areas?
