So, I was looking for ideas for artwork for my apartment....
By lafemmedramatiqueand I came across one of my new fav. etsy shops... I've already suggested to someone else some of the stuff in there... it's modernarteveryday.etsy.com
unfortunately, I'm poor, and can't actually afford to BUY any of the stuff... oh, how I do hate that whole money bussiness...
So, here are some of my favs, and, more importantly, the ones that I think I might be able to get away with DIYing... not exact copies (duh, that's stealing) but.... "inspired duplications based on another artists work" if you will... I must also mention that I am not the best artist (as in, I have very very little artistic experiance) and I also have very little funds (as in, I have no extra money after it all poors into rent and food... i even used a gift card to buy food today... ya, i'm that broke)...
Love these trees... I'm thinking a camera, some photoshop, and a color printer, prehaps? or possibly some tan fabric or paper and some paint... we shall see...
I love these, too, mainly b/c they are so similar to my duvet cover (white background w/ blue and purple flowers, w/ the middle row of flowers stitched in gold... yay target!)
I'm thinking either photograph my duvet cover and print out some photoshopped versions, or just blue paper and some paint.. maybe even white out, which is SOOO easy to come by, and which I have used for such reasons before...
Again, it would tie in well with my room... that's almost identical to the petal shape of the blue flowers on my bedspread (it, too, is sort of modern art-esque)... So i'm thinking maybe blue flowers instead of yellow? although the yellow would match my begonia :)
I love love love this print... it also comes on pillows! I want it so badly, you have NO idea! I'm not certain how I would diy this w/o some paint and some patience, but I love it, all the same!
and finally the birds... I'm obsessed with birds, lately... not sure why... birds, trees, flowers, and the cute little squirrel that lives in the tree outside my window....

I'm so glad I could help. I hope you can find scrap wood at one of the store you have near you. If not you can always head to a constructions tie during the day and ask for scraps. Never take anything from a construction site withoug permission in most if not all states it's punishable by law. Even if it's in a dumpster. Scrap is ususally sold to a recycling center. Anyway you might be able to get great scraps free!
I'm a fabriholic too! I have twenty 56 quart clear containers and a number of other smaller ones (I've lost count) filled with fabric. Not to mention the bolts of fabric.
Do you have any scraps of fabirc that could be stretched around a sturdy thrift store frame and used as art? Back in the 70's you could buy a panel of fabric meant to be stretched over a frame and used as art. Someth9ing like this piece. http://www.designandfun.com/images/fabric8.jpg
I'm making art for our daughter's first apartment to save her money to pay off her furniture with. It not only helps her out, but it's a good excuse to get me back to being creative. Which to me is almost as important as breathing.

That helped me more than you even realize! Just knowing how cheap the wood scraps are def. helps a ton... We don't have a Home Depo near me, but we do have a Lowes and a Menards, so I'm sure that ONE of them will probably be cheap about it, especially if I tell them that I heard Home Depot will do it for cheaper. :)
I love that idea for the trees, too! I also have been looking up ideas for stenciling fabric (b/c I also make my own clothing) from stencilry.org, and I was thinking that it would be fairly easy to either make a stencil and spray paint, or stencil some scrap fabric and then staple it on... the last way would be more expensive, however, so i think I would resort to that only after I've actually started trying to stencil my own t-shirts and stuff, so I don't waste precious fabric!
Seriously, when you're in college, you try to do ANYTHING that you can to get as much use out of things as you possibly can with the least expense... or, at least I do!

I can think of a very easy way to make these on a very low budget. Check your local lumber store for scraps of MDF, it's very smooth. Most mark them way down, some give them away. Ho De's scraps are $1.01 to $5.01. They'll even cut them to size for you. Up to three cuts free. Seventy five cents each cut after that. Most don't even do that though.
Now buy a cheep roll of masking tape and however many cans of spray paint in the colors you need. Wal Mart's off brand is only 96 cents if you can find the colors you want. I've had great results with it too.
For the trees spray the background white of color of your choice. Make sure to get the sides. Let dry according can directions.
While you're waiting for it to dry tear the masking tape into odd strips and tape them into a tree shape making sure to burnish it. (rub with a popcicle stick or something similar) Now spray your top color again making sure to get the sides.
For hanging them you can either use 3M command strips or a saw tooth hanger nailed in the back.
