Best Way to Divide Living Space that is Basically One Long Rectangle???

By kristinirene

My husband and I are downsizing from a huge 1200 sq ft Portland OR flat to a bizarre 500 sq ft Florida apartment near Downtown St. Petersburg, FL.  Both have their own charms but rather than having very defined living spaces to basically one very long room of gorgeous hardwood floor (This is just guessing, but it is barely 7' across and maybe 15-18' long!) to have our dining/hanging/listening area in!

We are set with our bedroom space for now, but I am freaking on arrangement possibilities for the long room.  We have a Todd Oldham couch which is approx. 90' inc. arms.  We also have an antique dining table with fold down leaves that is supposedly about 3'x4'.  We have a massive IKEA shelving unit that we did measure and it will fit against the back half of the space, against the wall from the door from the kitchen.

I know this is confusing to imagine and I am attaching a small pic from a cell phone that might help.

My one idea is to put my mid-century modern dresser against the far small wall as a credenza for the TV et al.  There is certainly no room in our bThe Looooooong Room!edroom for it! The Looooong Room!

I'd divide the room with a backless sofa/bench or a couple of cube seats thereby breaking up the room into two square-ish spaces. I have a long and rather thin living room. I have a piano at one end and a fireplace at the other. About five feet out from the fireplace, I have two leather cubes (about 18" square). This breaks up the room but doesn't block the fireplace from view. Looks/works great!

Screens might be a way to seperate it and give the illusion of walls. Also, perhaps area rugs could do the trick, if you don't want to take up space with screens.
