PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY CHALKBOARDS!

By kookieann

Is it possible to get a nice smooth finish when applying black chalkboard paint with a roller?  If so, can someone tell me how?  I'm on my third can of chalkboard paint and still don't have a good chalkboard.  Now, I am painting on brand new chalkboard material.  It is green and I need black.  The finish looks like orange peel; I see someone said when you put it on it looks like orange peel, but when it dries it dries smooth.  Well, mine dries like smooth orange peel.  I have read about so many people using a roller to appy it to a wall and they are really pleased the way it turns out.  I wouldn't be pleased with a wall if it looked like my finish.  I have talked to people at the paint stores and they have given me several tips such as:  make sure your surface is clean & smooth, don't shake the paint, stir it for 5 minutes, don't press down too hard, let the roller do the work, don't paint when it is too hot, use the right kind of roller etc.  I have tried several rollers - 1/4" nap for ultra smooth finish (from cheap to expensive) and also tried foam rollers.  I want to make several boards (2'x2') but this is getting quite expensive for a so called cheap project. This was supposed to be fun, but so far it has been a pretty big headache.  I won't use spray without a spray booth so that is out.  I'm not so good with a brush, but I thought the roller would be a cinch!  Not so, for me anyway.  If anyone can give me some new ideas, I will try again.  I'm ready to cry, but I'M DETERMINED NOT TO GIVE UP!!  They say where there's a will there's a way.  I have the will, now I just need way.

Thanks to all who read this and believe me, I'd appreciate any comments you may have!

Also, it might help to thin the product a little and do multiple coats.

If you haven't, try using a foam roller. it should leave a shallow texture when you paint it on, but should disappear as the paint dries.

Since you are working with a small surface area (2'x2') you might want to go with the chalkboard paint that comes in a spray can.  I can pick up a can locally (I believce it is the Krylon brand) for a little over $4.00 a can.  No need for a spray booth if you work outside.

What happens when you apply mort than one coat with a roller?  Does the surface smooth out, or does it remain textured?
