Living Room / Bedroom colors??

Hello! I am about to move into a rent house, and would like to paint to walls to go with my furniture. What wall colors would look good??...

In my living room, I have a couch and love seat in an tan color, and my rug/coffee table/entertainment center is a chocolate brown. We have a few dark red accents.

In my bedroom, its all black furniture with silver accents, and the bedspread is black with white accents.

I would love to go for bold colors, but because I'm renting I have to get my colors approved ahead of time by my landlord. She was somewhat hesitant for us to paint at all, so I can't go too dramatic.

Also, there is a fireplace in the living room of the rent house, but it is painted white like the walls! What can I do about that?

There's plenty of room for compromise if your landlord approves.

See if you can do ONE room at a time. If your landlord feels it can add value and likes what you've done then maybe she would approve of further painting.

I agree with Caya123. Using curtains or wall hangings will brighten up a space. If you like DIY, find a ceiling to floor bookshelf, sideboard, buffet, chest, etc and paint a bright red (or favorite bright color) to add some color without damaging walls.

Remember if you decide to use the tall bookshelf, you still need to bracket it to the wall, but be sure to find the wall studs.

I would select colors according to feelings you want to have while you are in that room. For example for the bedroom I would not use any bright, intense colors such as red. I would use a relaxing color such as a light blue. I think a greyish green would go nicely with the chocolate brown entertainment center. I would reserve the bright bold colors to a working space or a kitchen.

Personally I never quite understand the vivid wall color thing. My DH painted his office a darkish orange, three walls plus the ceiling- one wall is a whiteboard, and the floor is shiny dark green tile. It looks like the inside of a basketball, sort of. It would drive me nuts to be in there more than 10 minutes- but it seems that REALLY LOUD wall colors are popular now. Anyway, in deference to your landlord & the resale value of HER property, you could paint the walls neutral colors, and use really vivid curtains, or hang bright wool blankets up, or other bright wall-hangings, to take up most of the space. You could even install brackets, get a really long curtain rod, and cover a whole wall with fabric of your choice, if you really wanted. That would give you the color you desire, without too much damage to the wall (assuming you are willing to fill in the holes when you leave, and the Landlord is o.k. with making holes in the wall at all.)
