My bathtub lights up. The walls are indestructible. So is the floor.

By jrysavy

When building my house, I had no idea that simple lines on a bath tub face were impossible to find. Came up with this idea to put a cheap flourescent shop light back there and use skyglass as the face of the tub. There are access points on either side after putting fake cold air returns on the walls. And Voila! A built in, mega-cool night light.

Another noteable feature in this indestructible kids bathroom...the backsplash features a stainless steel (sheet metal) surround. So bring it on Transformers. Bring it on sharp objects...let's see you try to destroy these walls! Oh, go for the floors too, they're stained unpenetrable concrete.

KATYMACNANA: This one's a little trickier. You have to have a couple things going for you. First, your tub must not have a face on it -- most porcelain tubs are like that. They have you put something over the face, whether that's wood, or something decorative, or whatever. In this case, I had my builder put in sky glass (I think that's the name). It's meant for counter tops, and it's semi transparent. Then we put a simple flourescent shop light behind there, mounted loosely. There is access on both sides because of the way the bathroom was built, but I imagine as long as you could access from one side, it would still work. Anyway, in my case there are fake cold air returns to get at the light if needed. There's a switch on the wall that turns on/off.

That is so cool, but again, how do you do that?

Unique and beautiful, too!  I also love the idea of a stainless steel backsplash - our dining room table has a stainless steep top that my boys have not been able to destroy in spite of their best efforts!
