Originally from Deltaville, VA, I have been living in Greenville, NC since 95. I jump back and forth between Greenville and Chapel Hill. I have a BS in Construction Management and an MS in Digital Communications. One of my ultimate goals is to work in the Smart Home industry. I'm currently an instructor at Pitt Community College and the opportunities seem to abound there but no full time work just yet.

I teach Technical Writing, Inventory Management, Operations Management and Detailed Planning and Scheduling. These courses are either on a rotation schedule or will be soon. I am working with a gentleman on a Lean Manufacturing curriculum. I enjoy being a part of building something.

I really love working with technology. Give me something to do with it, and if I don't know it, I'll teach myself to work with it. I enjoy photography, gardening, writing, the beach and just about anything to do with technology.

My biggest pet peeve is, "Being a single parent is not an excuse." It's one thing that motivates me to want more for where I live, how I live, etc. Remembering this protects me from the "I can't do this or that because..s". I have had to build things for a while to "make do" as a single mom, but I never said, "I can't do this because I ... don't know how...don't have money...am a girl..." When I take on a project, I remember that I've always been in worse atmospheres and then I go for it.

I like DIY projects. I've built and remodeled things for myself and others. My latest thing was to find a plan for a bed, and that is how I found Curbly. I intend to build a platform bed that I found the plan for on this site. (I just love Googling things!) I will be revising the plan to use 100% recycled items. I was supposed to have begun doing this about a month ago but my sister in law's chemo treatments changed this week and I'm "off schedule" for my DIY projects.  It's now on the backburner.  I still have a storage unit that needs to be cleared, too. I hope to come across things that I may have forgotten in storage that I can put to good use.

Desk Plans???

By joye68 Dcam9818_medium

These days everything but my vehicles (I should be thankful, eh?) is breaking down. My camera went a few short days ago while trying to take a few shots. The desk broke when we moved it back into place. I have a board nailed in the back but it will not last forever.Currently there is a corner unit computer desk in place, but I am very open to buildable desk plans I can modify into something retro, corner unit or not. I can use two parts of the existing unit and slap some wood on top of it, but I'd like... »MORE

Finally did something productive to our place...

By joye68 Dcam9818_medium

We painted the living room a nice sageyish green ending into the kitchen with a nice curvey line from ceiling to floor. We put some of the same color into a separate container and added some white to it to lighten it up a bit. Then we added another line of color a lighter shade from ceiling to floor but varied the width from top to bottom. The kitchen is white with red accent paint already so it doesn't dominate anything, and I still get to have some retro in the living room. We still haven't started to fix the... »MORE

I would like to thank you for helping me . The sites you spoke of are amazing. So many choices and much information, many decisions, but fun. It was touching to me to hear of your grandmother it was nice of you to share that with me it moved my heart as though I could see it . It is my hope that you will not only have a home of  your own but one to carry such a lovely tradition. May all your dreams come  to fruition.

Thanks for you advices, they are realy helpful. I probably wont be able to start right away to paint. It is always the same: just decide to do something, and something more important and urgent will come.

Well, at list I have all those paints in my bedroom to remind me what I have  to do.

Excellent !!! Remember to mix it all WELL before you... well mix it together... I'd love to see some pics how it turned out.

If it turns out you don't have a lot of a paint color that you really like once mixed, paint one of those paint mixing sticks or a piece of wood or something small you can save in the event you want to use it again. Then you'll have something to go by when you go back to the paint store.

If you REALLLY want to use paint you may not have much of, try taping off an area you can use for a background for pictures. If you don't put the tape down securely, color may bleed under it. When you get finished pull the tape up after about a half hour to let it set. Be sure to use painter's tape that will release the wall easily. Lots of people will let it dry, but I don't because sometimes it may peel up with the tape. Then you have to repair the finish. For me, it's best to just wipe off that spot or maybe expand it with a few brush strokes until it's the way I want it.
