Kitchens with Green Clean
By jasimarSo my germ obsession conflicts entirely with my family's design to clean more greenly. I'd really like some input on how you sanitize your kitchen without harsh chemicals. I've read lots of conflicting information about vinegar and baking soda and how much they really get rid of spilt chicken/ meat bacteria. Also, I'm open to new products and methods. Tell me how you do it, means and method.

I know the floor cleaner concentrate I use has Tea Tree oil as well as citrus in it and does a fantastic job. Removes all the nasties that get left behind by having 4 small children in the house and makes for a great fresh smell.
Something also to consider is the dish rag you use for counter tops and such. Just rinsing out the cloth does not clean it. I remember a few years back Cooks Illustrated magazine had a labratory test a number of ways to disinfect your dish towels and rags. The tried a number of different methods and then had an independent lab test for the amount of bacteria left on towels and rags. Turns out that microwaving your rag/towels killed off more bacteria than any other method. I cannot remember if it was 1 or 2 minutes but I think it was 1 minute. Just be careful as they get pretty hot.

Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant - add a few drops to your vingear and baking soda mixture and spray. I would feel condifent that would work as a general purpose cleaner. Reserve a plastic cutting board for working with meats and wash it with hot, soapy water with a little bleach. Hopefully that will satisfy both the anti-germ and green-clean camps!
