Finish the kitch - Countertop Q

We began remodling our kitchen with new tile floors, Ikea cabinets and a seamed Ikea countertop. A year or two has passed, bringing baby and other projects. But we're ready to return now and finish the job.

Our countertop isn't working for us. We need a seamless alternative and not on the hugest budget. If we don't want granite prices but want something smooth and modern, where do we go?

Hey Jasimar. Any kind of stone or solid surface material is going to be expensive. I've seen a DIY zinc-wrapped wood application that looked nice. The old standby, of course, is laminate. Laminate manufacturers have come a long way in recent years. They make some 'prints' that really do rival the look of stone. I've been in several houses where I or others have been fooled by it. One trick in making it look more natural is the edging, I think. The 'modern' edge seems to trick the eye better than the rest. Some manufacturers are even offering solid surface edges applied to the laminate. As for cost, laminate is very inexpensive. Sure, it won't stand up like stone or solid surfacing, BUT if it gets mucked up or if your tastes change in a few years, you'll be out very little money. The only seam you'd have is if your counter makes a 45 degree angle--like a peninsula--because those corners are mitered. You might want to check out the Wilsonart website for some inspiration.
